Robyn covers Coldplay’s ‘Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall’

Last week it was Friendly Fires making good noise with a Lady Gaga track, this week it’s Robyn covering what is in my view one of the best pop songs of 2011 by Coldplay. It’s got that minimal, cold Scandi vibe Robyn does so well.

New Music: Manna

Born in Paris to a Finnish mother and Algerian father, Manna resides in the Finnish capital of Helsinki, where she’s been crafting an experimental and hauntingly beautiful sound. ‘Lead Me’, out on 14th September, is the debut track from album Shackles, carries a mixture of heavy grooves, beautiful melodies and haunting yet equally uplifting vocals. Check out here.

When pop gets desperate (Cher Lloyd)

This is what Shepherds Bush (West London) looks like right now. I think Sony Music’s probably spent a fortune amassing to an amount that could get South Sudan out of financial ruin on Cher Lloyd, in Shepherds Bush alone. And seeing her intolerable lyrics plastered on every available piece of street furniture doesn’t make me like her any more. But here I am, blogging about her, spending time out of my life to moan about her.

I never moan on here. I know she’s just a kid, and if I’m totally honest, I sort of can’t get the song out of my head, but this attitude she carries around seriously puts me off. Cher, you’re fucking with my head. Stop it. You’re a hater, just let it go.

First Watch: Joan as Police Woman ‘Chemmie’

Sexy, sultry sounds from Joan as Police Woman’s new single, Chemmie (out August 1st) – I must admit I didn’t know who she was before watching this video but I kinda like her!

New Music: Grenades for the Wall

More cute new Swedish musical goodness here. I haven’t really heard anything like this before; it’s sort of laid back catchy electro pop. Definitely some potential there!  Check out here.

Free Download: Pete & The Pirates ‘Winter 1’ (Phewneral Remix)

One of the best remixes I’ve heard this month. After the release of second album, ‘One Thousand Pictures’, Pete and the Pirates will release one of the album’s stand out tracks, ‘Half Moon Street’ as a digital download single on August 29th before embarking on a headline tour of the UK, through September and October.

New Music: Bluey Robinson

Oh my God. I thought I mentioned this guy a while back but it seems I haven’t. Swedish born, London raised Blue Robinson’s got a neo-soul kinda vibe. If Stevie Wonder did sexy, this would be it. Check out here.

An Ode to Amy Winehouse

My plans for tonight. That’s baby talc powder and Benadryl before anyone gets any ideas. And no, I won’t be ingesting either. The booze might really happen though. You know what, say what you will about the sadness of tonight’s news, but her talent will outlive it and be ever lasting. RIP Amy.

Bye Bye Amy

My biggest musical idol of all time, Amy Winehouse, was found dead today at the age of 27. I am so, indescribably upset right now- absolutely shocking news. I always thought she would work her way out of the drugs and bad lifestyle. Why do the good ones always go first? Such a shame. Unbelievable.

I still remember the first time I saw her live, and I remember the countless other times I would see her live, audiences growing bigger with each performance, and that voice growing stronger, before it all started to get too much for her.

But thank you Amy for your music, and for giving this little Arab the strength to pull through with your amazing talent. Rave it up in Heaven. Tonight I’ll drink for you babe. Here’s my dedication to ya.

New Music: Nik West

A bass-heavy, soul sound with punchy attitude. If you like some of Prince’s newer material, you will love Nik West. Check out here.

Get up!

Remember Mary Mary? They were kinda big in the 90’s with their semi-Jesus hit, ‘Shackles’. I stumbled across this on YouTube and it made me feel good. Get up!

I grew a special attachment to Oslo when I went there last year- I didn’t expect a city to be so beautiful, friendly and calm. All this bombing today broke my heart, it’s such a sad story and a horrible way to force a message through. Stay strong Norway.

First Watch: Emeli Sandé ‘Heaven’

This video is like Unfinished Sympathy 2011 but it works so good! Can’t wait to see and hear more from this girl. Such an awesome talent.

First Watch: Black Cherry ‘One Another’

I’ll be very surprised if this track doesn’t become an internet hit. Hackney bred duo Black Cherry release their double A-side single ‘One Another’ and ‘Lost In The System’ on 29th August. A very catchy dance fusion of rock and electro.

New Music: Sameblod

Amidst the 100’s of tracks I hear every week, something little just stands out and makes you think ‘yea!’. Sameblod did this to me this week. They’re an electropop duo from Stockholm who make friendly sounds that kinda wanna hug you and dance with you at the same time. Their remix of Lykke Li’s ‘Dance Dance Dance’ is fun. Check out here.

New Music: Airship

There’s something about listening to Airship that reminds me of my uni days in Manchester: this four-piece from the city give out a big, anthemic sound that commands your attention. Their debut album is produced by some of the team behind the Doves, Cherry Ghost the Editors. Check out here.
