This Is England ’86 is over :-(

Probably the best drama on telly this year so far- the end scenes were spectacular. Really worth catching up on 4OD if you missed it last night. Can’t wait for the DVD to come out.

This is England ’86

I was genuinely excited when I found out that This Is England was coming to the small screen. The film was an outstanding piece of British work, and seeing as the entire cast and crew reformed to carry on the story through the 80’s- I was sure this would probably be the best bit of telly I would watch this year. And I was definitely right- The story picks up 3 years later from the film, and it was a lot lighter and fun than the original flick, without losing it’s real essence. Check it out. Channel 4, Tuesdays at 10pm.

England’s new soccer kit

… is blue. Why? The English flag has no blue in it. Designed by Peter Saville, who is probably one of the most iconic graphic designers in the UK right now thanks to his famous records sleeves. I don’t know. The more I look at it the more I like it… Just seems a bit wrong.

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World

In my eyes, everything Michael Cera does is a winner. This film is no exception- with awesome graphics and quick-pace story lines. But I don’t think it will be of much fun for anyone who didn’t grow up with computer games as a kid, since pretty much the whole movie revolves around Cera trying to kill all seven of his girlfriend’s evil ex’s in a manner of geeky techie ways. This film didn’t do as well as it should have in the US, so make sure you go out and see it- it’s really very good!

Ernesto Neto at Hayward Gallery

Managed to catch the Ernesto Neto show at the Hayward Gallery in it’s last few days. I didn’t know what to expect when I walked in to see loads of oversized fluorescent tights suspended between walls. But that was pretty much all it was- one giant bouncey stretchy room. You could pull and tug anything you wanted to, and touch whatever you felt like touching. It was pretty fun and colourful- check it out before it closes if you can. The gallery was split between this show and something called The New Décor, which was utter shit (from what I could gather, it was all old bits junk grouped together to make ugly bits of furniture- real cutting edge…), but your ticket covers both exhibits. Project Morrinho at Southbank Centre

Work as been extra hideous of late so I’ve taken a few days off to reset my wires and bring some Alfitude back in to my life. Today I went to the Southbank Centre in London to have a poke around this Brazilian season they’ve got on right now. Much as Im beginning to dislike living in London and being a Londoner, this was all still pretty cool. Project Morrinho is a free installation outside the Southbank, made from bits of shit to look like a favela. Check out my Flickr for more pictures.

“I’m selfish, impatient and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control and at times hard to handle. But if you can’t handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don’t deserve me at my best.”

“Imperfection is beauty, madness is genius and it’s better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring”

“Its better to be hated for what you are than to be loved for what your not”

“When it comes down to it, I let them think what they want. If they care enough to bother with what I do, then I’m already better than them.”

“I’ve never fooled anyone. I’ve let people fool themselves. They didn’t bother to find out who and what I was. Instead they would invent a character for me. I wouldn’t argue with them. They were obviously loving somebody I wasn’t.”

“If I’d observed all the rules I’d never have got anywhere.”

“It’s all make believe, isn’t it?”

“I believe that everything happens for a reason. People change so that you can learn to let go, things go wrong so that you appreciate them when they’re right, you believe lies so you eventually learn to trust no one but yourself, and sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.”

The Pulse of USA

I’ve always been fascinated by infographics, and I’ve really been into research that tries to calculate people’s emotions. This infograph is pretty amazing. It’s taken all the twitters coming out from the US (around 300 million of them), and calculated emotional words people used in their updates to build a map of emotion. Looks like California is the happiest place in the country- but come working hours no one’s happy :-( There’s also video of the map here.
