néomí – somebody’s daughter

Rising folk-pop singer and songwriter néomí starts the year with a vibrant yet powerful new single called ‘somebody’s daughter’.

The song presents listeners with an interesting contrast. The production blends dreamy pop with hazy indie, resulting in a playful sound. Meanwhile, the lyrics hit listeners with raw and moving words. The musician explains:

“To me ‘somebody’s daughter’ feels quite heavy as the message is really: whatever a person does, don’t forget he or she will still be someone’s kid. Times can get rough, and being mad on one another is healthy, but to forget the humanity behind a face can feel a bit cruel.”

“It is a sort of ‘cry for help’ like hey I am juggling through life too. Just like you and you and you, don’t forget I am still somebody’s daughter. Why are we alive if you can’t make mistakes, and what did I do by loving them all that time and getting just a simple rejection in return. Somehow in that state I was in, it didn’t feel fair. As if they forgot I am still somebody’s daughter.”

néomí will be on tour all across the Netherlands later this spring, with a big headline show at Amsterdam’s Tolhuistuin in May. In our view, it seems certain that néomí will become one of Europe’s most exciting musical exports this year.

néomí – garden

Acclaimed Surinamese-Dutch starlet néomí is marking her name as an artist to watch. Having garnered praise from pretty much every tastemaker out there, the singer and songwriter continues to impress with her beautiful new single, called ‘garden’.

The heartfelt song was written as an ode to her grandfather, and his struggles with Alzheimer’s disease. While most artists would shy away from approaching such a sensitive topic, néomí addresses it with thoughtfulness and sincerity.

“I wrote it for my granddad and it is a little ode to my grandmother as well. My grandfather is suffering from Alzheimer’s. He is at a stage now where he doesn’t remember who I am, and sometimes I wonder if he still knows or understands who he is himself. I see him walking around the garden or at family parties just completely lost but as long as my grandmother is there he will be fine. The beautiful part in this horrifying illness is that he still remembers my grandmother every day, just her, because she has been so important to him…I guess? In any occasion, either happy, scared or angry but in his case mostly loving, he looks at her. I think that is the most touching thing and a great example of how strong love is. Loving someone so deeply that even the illness can’t take over. Sometimes I’m scared that there will come a day where he forgets her too and then I think the battle he has been fighting will be over. Don’t get me wrong, I think growing old and dying is one of the most precious things there is, so this is not a sad story per se. I think he had the most wonderful life (except the 2nd world war) and I hope he will continue to remember her, and how much he loves her until his end. And if not, he has this song. And in the end, I strongly believe that they will find each other in another lifetime.”

You can catch the artist performing live over the next few months, with dates and locations listed below. With more than 79k monthly Spotify listeners, the demand for these gigs is likely to be high, so make sure you get tickets while you can.

néomí – skipping stone

Surinamese-Dutch folk pop artist néomí has been steadily building momentum since the release of last year’s debut EP, ‘before’.

The singer-songwriter returns today with the announcement of a follow-up record, entitled ‘After’ (out 14th April), alongside the release of sublime new single ‘skipping stone’.

“I remember myself writing this with my dear friend Jesse Koch, while I had just fallen in love with someone. That someone was going through a difficult time, and in those moments of our relationship I felt like a skipping stone: picked up and thrown over the water, as if I was nothing to him. When I was younger my Dad and I would go down to the river in France to find those flat stones and he would try to teach me how to skip them over the water. I always got frustrated doing it and it’s the image that came to my mind when writing this song.”

“I felt so insecure, not about me or my lover individually but the love we had. I couldn’t understand why he wouldn’t allow me to let me in. It felt unfair because I was letting him in, and he just threw me away, like I was his skipping stone to sink somewhere in the lake.”

To date, néomí has garnered praise from the likes of CLASH, The Independent, Under The Radar and Ones To Watch. She headlines Amsterdam’s iconic Paradiso on the 7th May – tickets can be found here.
