New Music: AIYANA

Hailing from the English seaside city of Brighton comes promising newcomer AIYANA. With a gorgeously melodic approach to pop, this rising artist creates songs that feel fragile and emotive in tone, while still maintaining a fresh and light essence.

Produced by the equally talented FJ Law, melancholic debut single ‘all my friends‘ is all about the breakdown of friendships, as AIYANA explains:

“‘all my friends’ was written about the time I fell out with one of my best friends – one night I was told out of the blue that we shouldn’t spend time together anymore. I actually wrote this song before it all happened, like I knew it was coming. The song is the combination of broken friendships, loneliness and at the time, the feeling of nostalgia knowing my friends and I were moving on from university soon.”

Be sure to follow this emerging artist as she readies the release of her upcoming EP, entitled ‘Friends Forever’ (out soon).

New Music: Gloomer

One of the most interesting releases of the week comes courtesy of Gloomer – a project created by established LA-based producer Elliott Kozel.

New single ‘Drumjoy’ boldly fuses elements of electronica with rock, resulting in a sound that feels high-octane, energising and refreshingly raw.

“This song was originally five or six minutes long with way more different parts and sections, which I eventually edited down quite a bit.  It’s about boredom and jealousy in a long-term relationship.”

Speaking of the accompanying visuals, Kozel says:

The music video is a collaboration between myself and animator Joon Voigt whose drawings were recently featured in ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’. We animated it by hand, making over 2000 drawings and collage pieces and photographing them one by one. We took a lot of inspiration from early 90’s cartoons like the Brothers Grunt, Beavis and Butthead, and Ren and Stimpy. During the process of creating all the images we watched a lot of Pauly Shore movies.”

To date, Kozel has collaborated alongside talents as notable as Jean Dawson and Corbin, as well as working on Yves Tumor’s forthcoming album.

New Music: Gwyn Love

Rising artist Gwyn Love unveils an anthem for nostalgia-loving Gen Z and millennials alike, through the release of their new collaboration with Toronto producer La+ch.

Bold, punchy and playful in tone, ‘good luck rly’ perfectly fuses classic 00’s punk sounds with a more modern electro-pop twist, resulting in a song that is guaranteed to bring a smile to your faces. Speaking of the accompanying video, Gwyn says:

“This video felt most true to who I am and how I see myself as an artist than any other video I have made. My good friend Max Hite directed the film and brought in all the right people to make the shoot go smoothly and also just have a really fun time doing it. My bandmates and I hit it off so well and I honestly would change nothing about the video except maybe the fact I got a concussion at the second location and still managed to finish out the shoot. Pretty metal!”

To date, Gwyn’s work has garnered praise from noted outlets like CLOUT, LADYGUNN and Hollywood Life, while also securing spots on flagship Spotify, Amazon & Apple Playlists.

“AFTER ONE PARTICULAR INCIDENT INVOLVING THE STATIONERY CUPBOARD, MYSELF AND THE PRINCIPAL DECIDED TO OFFER HIM TWO OPTIONS – EITHER SPEND THE REST OF THE ACADEMIC YEAR IN DETENTION OR JOIN THE SCHOOL SAFETY PATROL. HE CHOSE THE LATTER AND HAS CERTAINLY THROWN HIMSELF INTO THE TASK WITH ENTHUSIASM, ALTHOUGH PERHAPS A LITTLE BIT TOO MUCH ENTHUSIASM AT TIMES. I KNOW THAT HE AND HIS PARTNER INGRID BELIEVE THEY ARE DOING THE RIGHT THING BY KEEPING THE SCHOOL SAFE FOR ALL STUDENTS, ESPECIALLY THOSE THAT HE RATHER PECULIARLY DESCRIBES AS ‘GEEKS’, THOUGH HE HAS TAKEN IT TOO FAR ON A NUMBER OF OCCASIONS.”

New Music: Mikalyn

Presently commanding more than 140k monthly listeners on Spotify alone, Canadian indie-pop starlet Mikalyn is already garnering significant attention from music lovers across the globe. And pressing play on tracks like her new single ‘Phases’ gives you an understanding as to why this singer and songwriter is already so popular.

The song presents a thoughtfully constructed production that feels minimal and stripped-back, while still maintaining a beautifully emotive essence thanks to Mikalyn’s impressive vocals.

“The song is really self-explanatory to an extent; I’m singing about the different phases you go through in life but ultimately, the big takeaway from the song is to not dwell on the past. It’s not worth it because no matter how much energy you devote to it, you can’t change anything. And while I think everyone sometimes wishes they could do things differently, sometimes what you believe to be small moments can end up leading to bigger things.”

‘Phases’ is also released alongside accompanying visuals, of which Mikalyn says:

“Right from the outset, we wanted to invoke a sense of nostalgia with the video, but we also wanted it to feel authentic. And while we had bigger ideas for the video at first, Chris [Grey – ‘Phases’ co-writer & producer] and I were looking to just simply recreate the night we enjoyed when we wrote the song. What you see in the video is just us doing what we’d normally do in the span of an evening. Shooting the video in a candid style helps lend an air of authenticity to it.”

New Music: India Shan

London-based singer-songwriter India Shan showcases some of her home town’s finest new music through the release of melodic new single ‘Don’t Wanna’.

Dreamy and delicate in tone, the song delivers a style of production that infuses R&B with hints of electronica, creating a sound that feels fresh and distinctive yet soulful and moving.

“The song kinda wrote itself, and quickly too. It’s about the patterns in a relationship that aren’t necessarily healthy – wanting to try and make things work but the realisation that it’s not a functional place to be. I think that’s what defines a toxic relationship, when you’re fully aware it’s not right but you struggle to leave because the ups and downs are essentially addictive.”

With mentorship by London’s iconic Roundhouse, the Amy Winehouse Foundation and acclaimed producer Raf Riley, 2022 may well be Shan’s biggest year yet.

New Music: Bessie Turner

Photo / Laura Allard-Fleischl

Hailing from Suffolk in England is songwriter and artist Bessie Turner. This rising young starlet creates a style of sound that fuses the rawness and grit of indie-rock with the pensiveness of dreamy pop, as is the case with her new single ‘It Was Nothing’.

“I wrote the seed of ‘It Was Nothing’ years ago now. It’s about the loss of friendships and me trying to find peace and reason in a situation. I’m always the most sorry person in the room and take responsibility for things even if they’re not mine to carry, like if someone ran me over I would apologise for touching their car. I still haven’t found complete peace but at least I’ve made a little ditty. De nada, de rien, don’t worry about it, it’s kind of ironic and sarcastic I guess because I really, really care. The song is full of high and low energy and I wanted it to feel like a burst of emotion. The ending is a kind of sarky feel good end of play – it’s my favourite part of the song.”

With a refreshingly honest and authentic approach towards music-making, Turner has already picked up early praise from the likes of Clash Magazine and The Line of Best Fit, as well as airplay on several BBC radio stations.

Turner will perform some live shows this summer – including the Latitude, Standon Calling and Victorious festivals.
