New Music: Kev Olden

Irish talent Kev Olden crafts a beautifully emotive style of indie-pop that is immediately captivating to listen to. Olden moved from Dublin to Toronto just days before the first lockdown in March 2020, stunting all his plans.

Facing a change of mindset, he got back into writing his own songs. The culmination of a year living in new environments, self reflection and re-discovery resulted with gorgeous new single ‘Hush’ coming to life.

“This track releases frustration when the mountain seems too high to climb.”

New Music: Wil Owen

Bristol-based singer-songwriter Wil Owen’s style of music-making has an almost timeless appeal to it. Quite extraordinary considering ‘Will It All Work Out’ is the Welsh talent’s debut release.

Drawing inspiration from wild landscapes and the issues we face in modern life, his music is forever shifting to reflect his mood.

“This song is me trying to desperately apply some control, in some way, even by stating that I don’t know what’s going on. It’s like a purging of all these thoughts that I’ve held onto, that I hoped would allow me to be part of all the positive action coming out of this chaos.”

New Music: Flat Moon

A deliciously eccentric fusion of alternative funk and psychedelic rock from Leeds-based outfit Flat Moon, who have taken the two genres and blended them to form their own unique sound, dubbed ‘B-Funk’.

“‘Demise’ is our best tune to date, and is an excellent display of the genre fluidity we strive for in out music.”

New Music: Hanna Mel

Swedish talent Hannah Mel brings a dark, almost haunting approach to electro-pop that is completely engrossing. Subdued yet intense, her sound feels atmospheric and cinematic while still easy to connect with.

“‘Shy or Something’ is about two introverts having a crush on one another. Each too shy to admit it, and the frustration that it brings. I am a very introverted person myself, who easily gets quiet around large groups of new people. With this song, I wanted to play with the difference between being introverted or shy. Even though people might perceive them as the same thing – they feel totally different from within.”

Taken from the upcoming EP, scheduled for release later this autumn.

New Music: Dead Slow Hoot

British outfit Dead Slow Hoot bring an alternative approach to indie-rock that is truly quite special. Already receiving support from the likes of Radio 6 Music and BBC Introducing, they have mastered the ability to hit deep by blending poetic lyricism with bittersweet post-punk sounds.

‘Gesticulating Wildly’ is a powerfully captivating song featuring hazy guitars and hard-hitting social commentary. On the song, they say:

“This is about the need to put on a positive public face all the time, acting as if you’re doing well when really it’s a defensive tactic to prevent anyone from asking questions about what’s really going on. It’s sometimes impossible to deconstruct when you so badly want your external image to be real, and this was written in an attempt to be honest with myself in the hope that I could learn to be more emotionally forthcoming.”

Taken from the upcoming EP ‘A Kinder Kind’, which will be available on the 17th June 2021, along with a special vinyl release via Philophobia Music which will be limited to just one hundred copies.

New Music: Plastic Skin

A sublime fusion of  lo-fi beats, Bossa Nova, jazz, RnB and Latin vibes from a new project hailing out of Monterrey, comprised of Donovan Ferra of Fallen Roses, Eduardo Lopez and Jorge Porragas.

“Jorge initially wrote it just to make something that was fun and catchy, he wanted it to be the song you listen to when you were having a good time; to decorate happy memories. The song has a very lighthearted, chill vibe but with a little more complexity and energy.” – Plastic Skin

New Music: Grace May

This really is some of the finest RnB to emerge from Canada right now. Grace May has created a piece of music that is so deeply emotive in the most fragile and delicate way that it’s impossible not feel moved by ‘Rose Coloured’.

“‘Rose Coloured’ is about coming to the realisation that because you were so in love, you missed all of the signs telling you the relationship you were in was actually not a good one. That even through all of the let downs and red flags, to you, they were just your knight in shining armour.”

Taken from the upcoming EP ‘L.V.R.’ will be available from 14th May 2021.

New Music: KELS

A beautifully melodic fusion of alternative RnB and soul from Pittsburgh-based artist KELS. With heavy influences from the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, and Sarah Vaughan, you can expect her upcoming debut EP to be a true audible delight.

“‘No Lie.’ is a love song about meaning what you say. We throw around words that carry weight all the time- like ‘love’ for example. ‘No Lie.’ captures a moment in time when you finally find someone who means love when they say love. I wrote this song on the same $5 keyboard I bought at a flea market when I was 13.”

New Music: Isle of You

This may be the first you hear of Swedish outfit Isle of You, but they are already making significant headway in their home nation.

Just last year, the duo was nominated for ‘Artist of the Future’ at the hugely prestigious P3 Guld Awards last year, after their single ‘Hold Tight’ had the honour of being the most played song on Swedish radio station P3 in 2020.

And the moment you press play on ‘Fallback’ you’ll understand why they get so much love. Their style of music brings a new take on pop while still maintaining a sense of nostalgia that is totally mesmerising.

“This one goes out to the hopeless romantics who in a time of lockdown and isolation didn’t let fear and doubt get in the way of love.”

New Music: Glassworker

Multi-talented artist Glassworker is a musician, vocalist, songwriter and producer hailing from Austin, Texas. As a self-defined ‘exploratory pop’ project, their debut release ‘See Me Now’ serves as a beautiful introduction to their sound.

A spacious and electronic world driven by ethereal vocals, the song reflects on the intensity of loss while grappling with the pain and confusion of desires for reconciliation.

New Music: George O’Hanlon

A new addition to EMI Records, George O’Hanlon is a British singer and songwriter who’s emotive sounds will capture your heart and mind as soon you press play.

‘The Storm’ is one of those songs that seemingly begins with fragility and vulnerability, before building up to a hugely moving crescendo. This is a shimmering, cathartic and epic piece of music, built around bright guitars and sky-chasing melodies.

“It’s quite an angry song. I wrote it during a period when there was conflict going on around me that really fed into the music.”
