Showcasing some of the most exciting indie sounds to emerge recently from Germany, nothhingspecial is the new musical project of a 20-year old artist who is also known as Chrissie.

Lifted from her EP of the same name, ‘somewhere we don’t know’ presents listeners with a beautifully raw and emotive song that was inspired by the struggles that we face when trying to ‘fit in’ with what the world expects from us.

“This song was written when I felt like I couldn’t stand being in the current position I was in anymore. I think many people struggle with the idea of fitting into this world and system and portraying something for society’s sake. I honestly just felt like disappearing and wanted to see and feel something different.”

To date, nothhingspecial has garnered more than 440k career streams on Spotify alone, while critical praise comes from the likes of GEM Magazine and We Love That Sound.

New Music: Bellah Mae

We are kicking the weekend off with an exciting UK newcomer who’s style of alt-pop has already piqued the interest of several noted tastemakers like Wonderland, Clash and Notion magazines.

While ‘Boyfriend Of The Year’ is Bellah Mae’s first official release, the track has already gained considerable traction through TikTok. Elaborating further on the creation of the song, Mae explains:

‘I’d had the opening line of the chorus in my notes app for a few months, but I didn’t know which angle I wanted to take the song. Josh [Breaks, collaborator] and I started trying out ideas and, in an hour, we had written the song. It was one of those examples where it just writes itself.”

With more than 100k streams on Spotify alone in only a matter of days, it’s safe to say that Mae is one UK artist to watch in 2023.

New Music: Cherry Angel

One of the most exciting discoveries of the day comes courtesy of LA-based singer and songwriter Cherry Angel (aka Alycia Lancey).

‘Caffeinated‘ is a masterclass in dreamy lo-fi pop, and looks at the euphoric highs of being young and in love.

“It’s true, she’s doing most of the chasing, but she’s cool with it. She doesn’t think it’s complicated, so why should anyone else care? She’s having fun.”

New Music: Joey May

Today sees the introduction of promising newcomer Joey May, who is a 21-year old Austrian-born singer and songwriter currently based in London.

Inspired by the likes of Maisie Peters, Lizzy McAlpine and Holly Humberstone, May crafts a style of bedroom pop that feels subtle and fragile in tone, yet carries deeply personal and captivating lyricism. Elaborating further on debut single ‘Crime‘, May explains:

“With an end as unstable and unpredictable as the constant back and forth in a romantic situationship ‘Crime’ is all about crushing someone you’re not supposed to and the fear that comes with losing them.”

AVEY is the new musical project of Canadian singer and songwriter Avery O’Brien.

Debut single ‘end game’ is inspired by the emotions that come with falling in love, and serves listeners with a refreshing alt-pop sound that is both energising and charming in equal measures.

New Music: Siobhán Winifred

Fans of melancholic indie-pop will most certainly fall in love with rising London-based alternative artist Siobhán Winifred.

New single ‘This House’ serves listeners with a raw and deeply moving piece of music that looks at broken relationships – and the consequent fallouts.

“‘This House’ was written at a time when I was at my most vulnerable. I had it all down in twenty minutes and the vocals on the final version are all from the first take, everything was so raw. The song was written two days after a house party that my ex, his new girlfriend and I were all at. The song is about all the conflicting emotions you have when you want someone to be happy but are struggling to watch them move on. I wanted to capture the intense feeling of claustrophobia I had that night. Everybody there knew the situation and it just reached a point where I had to leave. I included sounds of a house party on the track and the production kicks in on the line ‘so I think I better leave’ – it’s about reaching breaking point and desperately needing to escape.”

To date, Winifred has received critical praise from the likes of BBC Introducing, Radio 1 and 6 Music, while her debut single ‘Black Hole’ (released earlier in the summer) has already accumulated more than 115k streams on Spotify alone.

We don’t often come across new artists from Switzerland, so today is a little bit of a special day as we unveil newcomer Mary Middlefield and her debut single, ‘Band Aid’.

The song looks at the notion of two lovers not sharing the same vision for their relationship, and demonstrates Middlefield’s beautiful style of songwriting that fuses elements of folk with indie and soft pop.

New Music: Fitzroy Holt

One of the most impressive releases of the week comes courtesy of multi-talented Australian newcomer Frazier Blue.

‘Sometimes’ showcases this Sydney-based creative’s extraordinary skills; the song was written, produced, mixed, mastered and performed by the artist. More so, the visuals for the track were directed and edited by Frazier himself.

New Music: KIDS

London newcomers KIDS unveil two massive releases today, firmly marking themselves as one of the most exciting discoveries of the week.

Consisting of life-long friends Beau Blaise and Alex Harvey, this rising duo fuse elements of indie with Britpop, indie and punk – creating a sound that feels distinctly unique and fresh yet still relatable.

Described by the band as ‘a party song for sad people’, first single ‘Alcohol & Cigarettes‘ presents listeners with an energising and vibrant sonic soundscape.

“It tells the familiar tale of putting on a brave face whilst distracting yourself after a breakup. Unhealthy nights out, bad hookups and booze may distract us from our feelings but inevitably leave us unfulfilled.”

Meanwhile, follow-up single ‘Settle Down’ showcases the duo’s more mellow and tender style of sound:

New Music: Yaz León

As far as buzz goes, it’s safe to say that singer, songwriter and producer Yaz León is one UK talent who is gaining considerable momentum at present – thanks to her exquisite fusions of neo-soul and alternative R&B.

Lifted from the newly-released ‘It’s Only Takeout Ma’ EP (out now), ‘DUNYA’ looks at our ability to grow and evolve through the difficulties that life presents to us. Elaborating further on the EP, León explains:

“This project took over a year in the making. It really took everything and a complete character development to finish. I had hoped that where my voice could not carry, the songs would speak louder and reach further. Some family and friends blessed the tracks with love. The EP tells many stories and uses many voices so that it might resonate with more people. It’s less about relatability and more about the personal and the taboo. I hope people enjoy and start conversations.”

To date, León has secured the backing of noted outlets like BBC Introducing, Vogue Paris and Dummy Magazine, as well as support on Selector Radio from the British Council.
