Berlin talent Cloudy June started her singing career fronting a death-metal band, and now the 21-year old has turned her vocals to creating some of the finest electro-pop to emerge from Germany this year; so much so that she’s already topped the HypeMachine Charts with her previous release ‘High Waist to Hell’.
A Danish/ Swedish talent who has mastered the sound of alternative RnB, infused with subtle pop quirks, and balanced with an essence of raw emotion and authenticity. It’s a very interesting approach to the genre and the song itself is pretty mesmerising from the first moment you press play.
Australian talent Halle Dot has created a slice of emotive RnB which is just so gorgeous and smooth, all the while still feeling minimal and fragile.
“‘Here With You’ explores the ups and downs of a relationship. It’s inspired by going through a rough patch with someone, but not wanting to give up. It’s about healing old wounds, and rejecting old, bad habits. It’s about hope.”
This is one of the most exciting talents to emerge this year. Contradash is a 22-year-old LA-based singer-songwriter-rapper who creates songs that transcend genres…
You just have to listen and decide for yourself. Personally, I am obsessed. Watch out for this kid; I think global stardom is imminent.
A new American talent who has merged eletcro-pop with subtle mellow undertones to create some of the catchiest melodies you’ll likely listen to all week. Everything you are experiencing was written, produced and mixed entirely by himself.
“‘Miss Seattle’ is a song about a girl I met last Fall while living in NYC. On our first date she kept telling me all these random facts about Seattle and I remember thinking ‘wow, I’ve never met someone who’s so passionate about their hometown…’ She had such a bright and bubbly personality, and I knew from the start she was special.“
A fusion of indie and power-pop from a Baltimore based outfit who aren’t afraid to deliver sincere and personal lyrics onto their songs.
“‘Serendipity’ is a deeply intimate and hauntingly personal look into the toll of mental health issues and uncertain spirituality. It’s a powerful expression of hope and hopelessness, highlighting with visceral sincerity the dichotomy between the desire to be rid of our fears and the compulsive, almost masochistic ways we indulge them, keeping us trapped on the line between two worlds.”
A stunningly intense piece of conceptual pop from the Swiss multi-instrumentalist Manuel Gagneux, known as Birdmask.
“I’ve tasted a great many fruits and licked my wounds all around the globe and it just might be time to head back home. Greet old faces and maybe even sculpt new ones that might find comfort in this place.”
Gorgeously mellow indie pop from this Los Angeles-based talent. The song itself has summery tones that feel both familiar and emotive at the same time.
A British talent that balances melodic pop with an alternative take on RnB.
“I wrote this song directly after a big break-up, it was my raw catharsis. The main plot would be how when you get into a relationship and the honeymoon period fades, and ultimately you’re left with a partnership between two people that don’t actually know each other that well because they were too busy f**ing and chilling to get to understand each other’s true wants and needs.”
Bestfriend are a duo who, through unlikely chance, managed to connect on Instagram (Stacy Kim is from the West Coast and Kaelan Geoffrey on the East). Their sound is a subtly charming take on indie pop which is universally enjoyable.
A tremendous track from a new artist who’s name runs in pop music royalty; Lola is the daughter of the legendary Annie Lennox. And it’s clear that the talent has carried through in the family. This is an extraordinarily powerful piece of pop that commands to be heard.
“The ones that hurt the most can be the hardest to let go of, I wrote ‘Back At Wrong’ about a relationship that was fraught with dysfunction, I knew I had to end it but the spell of our togetherness was so hard to break. We felt either ecstatic highs or heart wrenching lows, and the drama was fuel for passion and co-dependency. This song is a statement where I take the power back.”
Few artists have shown the same level of consistency with their releases as well as St. Lundi has. This is a rousing, almost anthemic pop track with a big chorus.
“‘Heavy Words’ was written from the perspective of someone who feels as though their relationship is on the brink of breaking down as they know their partner is holding onto the words they don’t want to hear, words that could end everything. Accepting this is never easy but the only way to get through it is by talking with one another. This song takes you on that journey of realisation.”
Taken from the debut EP ‘Heavy Words’ which is out via Propeller Recordings.
