New Music: White Arrows

Sometimes the PR blurb I get in emails can get a bit over the top, but for a change I actually found the story behind this band pretty interesting. So here it is, word for word…

The White Arrows story begins with a blind boy. Singer Mickey Church was born seeing the world as an impressionistic smear. His vision was righted at age 11, but his imagination ran wild for the intervening years. Since he couldn’t make out those around him, he assumed they couldn’t see him either. He rode made-up horses and sung songs that didn’t exist. His memory of growing up in L.A. is confined to smells, sounds and swaths of fuzzy color. Mickey’s father, a student of African percussion, encouraged him and his little brother Henry to pick up instruments as kids, so they played what was around. With family back east, Mickey eventually left for NYU, and unexpectedly wound up with a degree in shamanistic ritual.

New Music: The Penelopes

Hailing from Paris, The Penelopes are dynamic duo Axel Basquiat and Vincent T. Now living in London’s trendy east, the pair are in the city that live and breathes ‘Gloomy Indie’, a genre the pair fell in love with when living in the industrial suburbs of north Paris.

Influenced by British bands such as The Cocteau Twins and New Order you would expect their own music to follow in the same footsteps, but happily, the band contradict their influences by creating this multi-layered, sparkly indie-pop. Check out here.
