Thavoron – Tommy Loves You

Acclaimed genre-bending singer and songwriter Thavoron is back today with a brand new project, entitled ‘Tommy Loves You’.

Thanks to his distinct approach to music-making, this hugely talented musician has created a collection of seven exquisitely crafted songs that are not only powerfully emotive, but also sonically unique in their production.

“The people I grew up with know me as ‘Tommy.’ This was a product of me learning cultural assimilation at a very young age, and feeling really embarrassed I didn’t have a ‘normal’ name like all of my peers that I grew up with.”

One of our favourite tracks from the album is ‘Why’, which presents listeners with a melodic fusion of indie and folk. The song feels almost ethereal and timeless, and displays Thavoron’s talent in its full glory.

Over a relatively short space of time, this Seattle-based singer and songwriter has grown to become a tastemaker’s favourite, and has picked up praise from outlets as respected as Before The Data, Ones to Watch, Under The Radar and METAL magazine.

Thavoron plays the Belltown Bloom Festival on the 5th and 6th June – more details can be found here.

Having previously featured both roman around and Thavoron on these pages, it seems only natural to also present to you their powerful new collaboration, entitled ‘Bear The Burden’.

Urgent and commanding in tone, the song shines a light on the environmental injustices that are increasingly becoming evident throughout the world, as roman around explains:

“The actions of one will not be enough to change the course of an economic, environmental, and power system which systematically burdens poor, minority, and disabled populations. The ways in which we continually destroy the planet are known and unchanging. These populations who are closer to their demise than those with a sense of entitlement are the first to bear the burden.”

A masterclass in hazy lo-fi pop and alt-R&B, the track is lifted from roman around’s forthcoming ‘Tell Me All About You’ EP, which is scheduled for release on 20th January 2023 via Trailing Twelve Records.

New Music: Thavoron

Emerging from Seattle is 21-year-old first-generation Cambodian American artist Thavoron.

By masterfully fusing elements of dream pop with indie, jazz and rock, this artist creates songs that are conceptually refreshing in tone, yet deeply personal and rich in emotion.

New single ’18’ sees Thavoron deliver lyricism that touches on aspects of queer youth, lust, and the emotional scars of traumatic relationships.

“’18’ is about a situation I went through when I was eighteen, naive, fresh out of high school, and desperate to love. The only thing that my partner at the time would see in me was my physical body. It’s mentally taxing to know that even if you do offer all parts of yourself to someone. No one is obligated to love you the way that you love them. Some people pick and choose which parts of you to fully see, and this song is about the events leading up to that. I wanted to highlight the sadness and beauty of intimacy and movement with this song. There’s something so inspiring about altering your concept of self and reclaiming your power in the same body you once felt so used in.”
