New Music: Sonny Kills

London has a new pop star in the making, going by the name of Sonny Kills. We’re so excited about this artist—it’s been a good while since the city has fostered a talent like this.

‘Normal’ is a song for all the people out there who feel like misfits that don’t belong. The track encourages us to embrace our differences, and, aside from its inspirational lyrics, it’s a very catchy pop banger.

“I remember sitting there, pretty wasted, and just thinking, ‘Why can’t I just be like them? Why do I always get too excited, get too carried away, and end up doing things I know I shouldn’t be?”

“I’ve always been different—I’ve never been like everyone else, but I know there are other people out there like me. The over-thinkers—the over-doers! And I want them to know it’s alright to be a little bit different and that if everyone was normal, it would be really boring!”

If you enjoyed playing ‘Normal,’ then you’ll probably also fall in love with the artist’s previous single, ‘Die Together,’ which you can listen to here.

colby! x Shaya Zamora – Monster

Two highly tipped US newcomers have just joined forces to create one of the biggest pop songs of the month, and it deserves your immediate attention!

‘Monster’ is a brilliant collaboration between acclaimed starlet colby! and rising singer-songwriter Shaya Zamora and was inspired by toxic relationships. Elaborating on the song, colby! says:

“‘Monster’ is about two people stuck in a toxic relationship. They don’t bring out the best in each other, and they know it, but for some reason, they can’t let go—or even try to become better for one another. One day I got a text from Shaya Zamora with a little audio file and a message that just said, ‘Hey, what do you think about this song idea?’ It was just a verse and chorus idea, but I loved it right away.”

colby! has been praised by the likes of Galore, Clout, and Fault, while Zamora’s music has been streamed more than 70 million times to date—quite the accomplishment! Keep these artists on your radar—it’s only a matter of time before both achieve global status.

Seafret – River Of Tears

Seafret have been going strong for more than a decade now and still continue to impress with their distinctive take on British pop-rock.

The duo returns today with a powerful new single called ‘River Of Tears’. Alongside its catchy melody and captivating vocals, the track’s energising production means this is sure to be one of the group’s biggest hits yet.

“’River of Tears’ explores the heartbreak of being in a relationship you always knew was doomed, yet still struggling to accept its inevitable end. We originally wrote this on piano but found the darker production worked so well we had no choice but to go for it. This song was a turning point for the album and even a little for us as writers. It isn’t a style of song we’ve done in the past, but it feels like we’ve opened a door to somewhere new and exciting.”

New Music: Ella Jinks

If you’ve yet to come across UK starlet Ella Jinks, then boy, have we got a treat for you today.

The London-based up and comer has already found praise from outlets as noted as BBC Introducing, and the release of her latest track is sure to propel her momentum even further.

‘Just Another Day’ is a sublime indie-pop sound with a soft, emotive essence. The song is not only melodically captivating but also features some really gorgeous vocals.

“My music is very vulnerable and is very honest and kind of introspective, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. It couldn’t be any other way.”

The track is lifted from the artist’s ‘The In Between’ EP, which is also out now (listen here). Speaking on the new record, Ella says:

“‘The In Between’ as an EP,  delves into the more uncomfortable parts of self discovery and learning to face those darker aspects of ourselves that we tend to keep hidden. The act of creating and sharing this project in itself has become a form of self-expression for me and a way of reclaiming parts of myself that I might have struggled to accept in the past. The songs became a cathartic release, a way of confronting my shadows and learning not to perceive them as flaws but as valuable parts of my identity.”

Avenoir – Art Of War

TRACK OF THE WEEK

Despite amassing well over three million monthly listeners on Spotify, Canadian talent Avenoir is still somewhat of a mysterious personality.

Having said that, his new single, ‘Art Of War’ is sure to propel his work into the mainstream. This is a sensational piece of alternative R&B that is really quite captivating to experience. A gorgeous soundscape sets the scene for the singer’s vocals to really shine through in a way that feels almost ethereal.

The artist recently picked up a Juno nomination for his first project Noire’ (Contemporary R&B Recording of the Year). The winner for the category gets announced later this month!

Cat Ridgeway – What If?

Emerging Orlando singer and songwriter Cat Ridgeway returns with yet another eccentric slice of indie rock that we’ve fallen head over heels in love with.

Playful new single ‘What If?’ incorporates elements of banjo, bari sax, and trumpet to create a sound that is intriguing but also tonnes of fun to listen to. The lyrics tell of an incident when the artist found herself lost in between 5000 acres of woodland after taking gummies.

“The lyrics center around everything I thought about that day. I eventually found my way back to my little cabin and realized that I’d never been more than 50 yards away from it the whole time!”

Fans can look forward to a debut album from the artist, called ‘Sprinter,’ which is out soon. In the meantime, check out more of her songs on Spotify right here.

ASHY – Ottoman

New Zealand songstress ASHY has yet to disappoint us. This immensely talented artist and songwriter has been building quite the name for herself in recent years, winning critics and music fans alike.

‘Ottoman’ is an important release in the singer’s career. The track is inspired by the hardships that she’s faced in the music industry—struggles that many other musicians can also relate to. Elaborating on the lyrics, she explains:

“‘Ottoman’ focuses on challenges I’ve had in the music industry and in life in general when I’ve been underestimated. The main lyrics in the pre chorus ‘all too often I’m at a loss I’m 10 steps behind at the start, on the Ottoman out of oxygen while you’re walking I’m running’ actually directly speaks on how I’ve felt being an Indian women in the commercial industry and that I have had to work 10 times harder to be recognised on the same level as some of my peers. This also has happened many times in my normal life, having to prove that I belong and should be treated the same as others when I first meet someone.”

ASHY’s accomplishments include being an SXSW performer for two consecutive years and also picking up sync placements for shows as iconic as Home and Away and the Emmy-nominated Grown-ish.

New single ‘Hollywood Forever’ is a masterclass in cinematic pop. The track’s production is flawlessly constructed, while the melody sticks in your mind for a good while. The song is a teaser to the artist’s upcoming debut EP, of which Fury says:

EEVAH – Lullaby

Photo / Simon Walker

We’ve already featured Yorkshire’s EEVAH some time ago, so we’re delighted to be sharing with you another new single from the acclaimed alt-pop outfit today.

Inspired by nightmares, ‘Lullaby’ is the second track to be released from the group’s upcoming ‘I Didn’t See It Coming’ EP (out on the 22nd May) and showcases a sound that is both powerful and emotive.

“I had the intro and was searching for the hooks and ideas to complete the song, and as soon as I had the line ‘it’s just a lullaby to me worth singing’ I knew what it would be about – night terrors! At night there are times when I genuinely feel out of control of what I’m thinking or feeling and it scares the shit out of me. Like when you wade in water and the sand disappears from under you, and it gets suddenly deeper and darker and colder and in that moment you realise you’re literally out of your depth, out of control and the panic sets in. Sometimes I have to get up and go make myself a drink just to snap out of it, then the birds start singing and it’s the most beautifully humbling and bitter sweet sound, and like a lullaby it sends me off to sleep. The world is thankfully still spinning and everything carries on as normal.” – Richard McNamara, EEVAH

EEVAH will embark on a headline tour across the UK, starting later this month at the Hyde Park Book Club in Leeds. Although this first gig is sold out, you can still catch the group performing in other cities here—but be quick!

New Music: Mychelle

TRACK OF THE WEEK

British soul is at a marvellous peak right now, with Hackney starlet Mychelle being one of the genre’s most promising newcomers.

This artist ticks every box for us—incredible vocals, sincere lyrics, beautiful melodies, and finessed, timeless productions. ‘Sweet Nothings’ surpasses being our track of the week; in fact, this is one of our favourite songs of the year.

“This track is for anyone that is over the Sweet Nothings that come out of someone’s mouth. They’re not going to work this time. Go away.”

And we’re not the only ones who are obsessed with this talent – she’s already been lauded by national publications like The Metro, Evening Standard, and Clash Magazine to name a few. One to watch!

Haiden Henderson – lovesucker

Artwork: Nicholas Vaughan Eliot

You’ve probably come across American artist Haiden Henderson’s music at some point recently. This emerging talent has quite the skill in creating viral hits, and the release of his latest single ‘lovesucker’ is likely to follow suit.

The track treats us to a fun pop sound that is instantly catchy and so, so incredibly easy to enjoy. Elaborating on the story behind the song’s creation, Haiden says:

“This song started as an inside joke with my fans about our unhealthy obsession with the Twilight series. While writing it, ‘lovesucker’ went from satire to one of the most fun songs I’ve written for this upcoming project.”

Haiden’s previous single, called ‘sweat’ picked up more than 10 million streams on Spotify and over a million more on YouTube, while his work has been praised by outlets as iconic as PAPER and LADYGUNN.

Eric Gabriel – Long Gone

Brooklyn songwriter and producer Eric Gabriel returns with one of the most interesting releases of the week today.

‘Long Gone’ is a spectacular fusion of genres, building a soundscape that is full of sonic texture and unexpected twists and turns. The track is refreshingly eccentric and marks Gabriel as one of New York’s most exciting rising artists.

“The third single off my upcoming debut album produced by Philip Weinrobe (Adrianne Lenker, Florist). It was recorded almost entirely live to tape with no click, headphones, isolation, and few overdubs.”

Fans in Brooklyn can catch Eric’s album release show at Union Pool on the 21st of March alongside fellow artist Caroline Kuhn. Tickets are available here.

New Music: Kirsten Izer

We’re very excited to be sharing with you a new indie artist emerging from LA, going by the name of Kirsten Izer.

Originally from New Jersey, this singer, songwriter, and producer creates songs that seamlessly blend indie with experimental pop. The result is a sound that is really quite unique, as is the case with her new single, ‘You’.

The track is inspired by the powerful connections that we sometimes have with special people and was co-produced alongside the acclaimed Randy Belculfine (noted for his work with Tones and I, Tanerélle, and more). On the lyrics, Izer says:

“It’s about that special person that you have such a strong connection with. No amount of distance or silence can change how much you care. You love them and you wonder how they’re doing, but they don’t need to call or explain—their existence is enough.”

Izer’s work has recieved praise from outlets like SPIN Magazine and Nothing But Hope And Passion. You can stream more of the musician’s work right here.

New Music: Uwade

Photo / Shervin Lainez

“Romantic love gets a lot of attention so when I was workshopping the project that would turn into ‘I Wonder,’ I wanted it to take on a different shade. It was about affection, gratitude, and devotion. Who better to dedicate it to than the people who have carried me through my life: my friends. This past summer I took a Latin class where we translated Cicero’s 2000-year-old treatise on friendship, De Amicitia. In it one of the characters claims that a friend is an alter idem, another of the same kind, a second self. This is what this song is all about; since we’re cut from the same cloth, I wonder what we’re made of.”

Extrazen – WHAT TO DO WITH YOUR HANDS

“This project is the first where I take the main stage not only as the artist but also as the producer. I remember the travels between Lisbon and Porto on the bus, finishing the songs and working through all the mixing and mastering sessions, figuring out every detail. When people hear this EP, I hope they take away the importance of being themselves, following their gut and trusting in their hands. Keep your hands moving to fight through adversities and discover who you really are.”

Cutty – Ain’t Talkin

Hull duo Cutty kick the week off with a big banger called ‘Ain’t Talkin’ and it’s pretty epic!

This is a punchy bop that makes us think about the moments in life when we feel as though we should say something, when in fact nothing needs to be said. Elaborating further, the band says:

“‘Ain’t Talkin’ is a song about defying the need to speak when what’s being said around you doesn’t matter. The song explores deep self-reflection, addressing ideas like detachment, normality, and silence, sometimes feeling as though people are walking one way and you another. ‘Ain’t Talkin’ expresses a journey of discovery of connection with others. The song also expresses defiance against falsehood and the notion of taking the time to piece together our own truths.”

The song’s production blends elements of lo-fi pop with trip hop, indie, and electronica in ways that we haven’t quite experienced before, which is really quite refreshing. Cutty are building some good momentum of late, with praise from outlets like DIY Mag and electronic sound of joy. An upcoming EP from the band is due soon.

Varas – Eaten By Worms

Photo / Lamia Karic, Studio Förgätmigej

Varas is no stranger to these pages, so it won’t come as a surprise to regular visitors that we’re featuring the incredibly exciting Stockholm-based producer and songwriter once again.

He’s back this week with a brilliant new EP and single that both share the same name, ‘Eaten By Worms’ (stream the full record here).

As always, Varas presents us with sonic art that melds genres together in a way that only he can create so perfectly. Speaking on the lead track, the artist explains:

“The lyrics are loosely inspired by Geryon from Anne Carson’s long poem Autobiography of Red, where Geryon is a boy who is also a red, winged monster. In the song, he longs for the safety of a cage after crashing to the ground when his wings stop working. The track explores themes of self-preservation using whatever resources are available. The idea to write it likely came from the bittersweet nostalgia I felt when realizing I used to handle certain situations better.” With nuanced lyricism and intricate musical layering, ‘Eaten By Worms’ doesn’t just introduce the EP – it demands the listener’s complete emotional investment, setting a provocative tone that echoes throughout the entire collection.”

To date, Varas has found praise from outlets like The Line of Best Fit, Under the Radar, and Earmilk, while his songs have amassed more than 1.5 million streams on Spotify alone.

Mikeyy – changes

Mikeyy has been on our radars for a short while now, with one of his former singles, ‘lift,’ landing a Track of the Week spot on Alfitude.

The promising Iraqi-New Zealander returns today with another gorgeous single, along with a new EP for us to immerse ourselves in.

‘changes’ is lifted from his freshly-released ‘breathe’ EP (listen here) and looks at the emotions that arise when we are all faced with having to change for one reason or another.

The song is sincere and heartfelt, starting with an essence of vulnerability before culminating into a sound that inspires optimism. So if your life trajectory seems a little unclear right now (if it is, we’re right there with you), then this song could bring some comfort and hope!

maxime. – hotliner

Canadian artist maxime. returns today with (yet another) sensational release to remind us all that he really is one of his nation’s most gifted indie talents.

‘hotliner’ has a beautifully melancholic style of sound that feels subdued and pensive but still maintains a tempo that keeps you on edge. Alongside the lo-fi production, the singer’s vocals add another layer of emotion to the song, which is quite captivating to listen to.

If you haven’t had a chance yet, we recommend you also give maxime.’s 2024 album the life and death of a doga listen—we’re quite sure you’ll fall in love with this chap by the end!
