New Music: Saint Christopher

Saint Christopher is the solo project of LA-based artist Christopher Kalil, who was previously a member of indie-folk group Arms Akimbo.

Through the Saint Christopher moniker, Kalil creates music that explores the different facets of the pop genre.

Songs like ‘Fire Season’ contain essences of indie, lo-fi and alt pop – all delicately fused together in a thoughtful and balanced way. Speaking on the song, Kalil says:

“Where I grew up,

We would get days off from school every Fall when the hills would catch fire.

Nowadays,

I have to stay in my seat and finish my work.

Back then it felt like the bad times would come in seasons. Same with the good times.

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve come to realise that the good times and the bad times happen all at once.

Fire season is all year.

This song is about the death of an old perspective and the birth of a new one.

The death of potential and the birth of acceptance.

I’m not looking for my big break?

I’m just looking for a little break.

We all deserve a pause button.

This song is mine.”

Zoey Lily – Friend

Anglo-French artist and songwriter Zoey Lily returns with a beautifully understated yet emotive blend of melodic R&B and dreamy alt-pop.

Timeless in its production style, ‘Friend’ is all about those odd (but relatable) moments when feelings begin to creep into a friendship with someone.

“I wrote ‘Friend’ about a friendship that slowly started falling apart when love got involved because I couldn’t return the kind of love my friend was looking for in me.”

The song is taken from Lily’s forthcoming EP, entitled ‘Too Many Nights’ which is due for release later this year. To date, Lily has garnered praise from notable tastemakers like BBC Introducing, The Line of Best Fit and tmrw.

Boo Seeka – Real

A fixture on the Australian music scene since 2015, Boo Seeka has grown to command a considerable and committed legion of fans thanks to his ever-evolving approach to music-making.

Taken from the forthcoming album ‘Between The Head and the Heart’ (out 30th June, pre-save here), new single ‘Real’ is a shimmering slice of dance-pop that is sonically immersive and lyrically compelling.

“’Real’ is definitely one of my favourites on the record for me and has so many different messages embedded in the meaning. I wrote this song at a bit of a low point, with the idea of creating a song that can be a bit of a sing-a-long wherever the listener may be. My album, ‘Between The Head and the Heart’, is twelve separate messages that I wrote throughout the COVID period. I really needed to do this for myself, and it has undoubtedly helped me get through the last twelve months. I never want to give away the exact message or meaning of why I wrote a song, firstly, because some things are incredibly specific and personal, but mainly, I love the idea of a listener creating their own meaning to the track. That’s the most important thing about art and music to me.”

Boo tours Australia alongside Hayden James this summer and early autumn, with stops including Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney.

New Music: Mikalyn

Presently commanding more than 140k monthly listeners on Spotify alone, Canadian indie-pop starlet Mikalyn is already garnering significant attention from music lovers across the globe. And pressing play on tracks like her new single ‘Phases’ gives you an understanding as to why this singer and songwriter is already so popular.

The song presents a thoughtfully constructed production that feels minimal and stripped-back, while still maintaining a beautifully emotive essence thanks to Mikalyn’s impressive vocals.

“The song is really self-explanatory to an extent; I’m singing about the different phases you go through in life but ultimately, the big takeaway from the song is to not dwell on the past. It’s not worth it because no matter how much energy you devote to it, you can’t change anything. And while I think everyone sometimes wishes they could do things differently, sometimes what you believe to be small moments can end up leading to bigger things.”

‘Phases’ is also released alongside accompanying visuals, of which Mikalyn says:

“Right from the outset, we wanted to invoke a sense of nostalgia with the video, but we also wanted it to feel authentic. And while we had bigger ideas for the video at first, Chris [Grey – ‘Phases’ co-writer & producer] and I were looking to just simply recreate the night we enjoyed when we wrote the song. What you see in the video is just us doing what we’d normally do in the span of an evening. Shooting the video in a candid style helps lend an air of authenticity to it.”
