Hailing from Berlin is songwriter and producer Dexter Francis Mason. This artist creates an eccentric style of music that blends lo-fi pop with electronic funk, resulting in a sound that is not only intriguingly experimental but refreshingly original.
Taken from the debut album ‘I’m Sorry You Feel That Way’ which is out on 28th May 2021.
If you know your Danish pop then you may recognise Ellison from his previous project, SHERPA (who was featured on here countless times).
Now he’s venturing solo with the fantastic debut release of ‘I Could Be Your Lover’. This is premium synth-pop that was made for the dance floor, taking inspiration from the New 80’s vibe which is spreading all across Denmark.
Berlin-based newcomer Piper 57 crafts a style of pop that feels future-forward, dark and atmospheric yet still easy to connect with. The danceable bass-driven music compliments a powerful vocal, and lyricism that is thoughtful and true-to-life.
“I want to learn new stuff, be around interesting people and see inspiring places. There are so many experiences waiting out there, and I can’t wait to turn them into music.”
A stunning debut from Vanessa Gimenez, who’s single ‘Make It Rain’ follows on from the disbandment of her previous project with Swimming Girls.
This is a piece of dreamy indie-pop that flows beautifully, making it instantly captivating and tremendously catchy.
“‘Make It Rain’ was the first song written for this project. To me it’s about retaining that childlike sensibility that is full of hope and dreams. A mindset that a lot of people lose once they grow older.”
Hailing from Los Angeles, ED.1T create an innovative blend of soul and pop that feels sleek and finessed, luring the listener into a sound that is both intriguing and captivating. And with over 17,000 monthly followers on Spotify alone, this duo are already building a solid and loyal fanbase.
It’s near impossible not to enjoy this new release from Australian indie-pop outfit ‘GENIIE BOY’.
With a sound that projects the essence of empowerment that you’d expect from a HAIM track, while carrying the same sweetness from a song by Corinne Bailey-Rae, this duo create music that is charmingly loveable.
Time for some of London’s finest new music. If you haven’t yet heard of emerging UK artist Lauren Dejey then get ready to be blown away once you play ‘Blackout’.
Citing influences like Labrinth, ROSALÍA, Jon Bellion and BANKS, Dejey’s sound brings a luxuriously dreamy approach to electronic pop that is not only beautifully melodic but also lyrically intriguing.
“I wrote ‘Blackout’ when I was in an uncomfortable stage in life. I kept going out, drinking and blacking out. I knew I had a great time, but I couldn’t remember much of the night before. This feeling of going beyond a limit and not realising made me feel really uneasy, so I ended up writing this song with two of my best friends. It plays on the idea of knowing you’re blackout drunk, what that feels like, what it looks like etc.”
One of the most interesting discoveries of the week, BB Cooper is a mysteriously illusive talent who I really know very little about.
With that said, his distinctive approach of creating guitar-driven alt pop-rock music is some of the finest that I’ve heard in a good while. On the backstory of ‘Blame’ he explains:
“’Blame’ is one of the more exaggerated stories in my songwriting, and I would say that I am a primary source for some of the lyrics. The main title hook focuses around the idea as to whether society is to blame for people not achieving their full potential or if it’s down to the individual – and I pose that question to myself. At the same time, I like to use humour where possible and keep a fun side to life.”
Hailing from Macmasters Beach, The Moving Stills are an Australian outfit who blend pop with alt-rock, and infuse elements of surf and psychedelica into their music so that it’s utterly spellbinding to the listener. This is a sound that feels both classic yet future-forward, all the while brimming with character.
“It’s about telling people who judge you to suck eggs. Judging people says a lot more about you than it does about the person you’re talking about. The song encourages people to disregard other people’s unnecessary opinions and judgements.” – Mike, The Moving Stills
The Fourth Son is a Philadelphia-based solo project created by Tim Connor. Crafting an eclectic style of music that blends elements of folk, rock, blues and reggae into something refreshingly original, this artist delivers a unique and captivating sound that is just so easy to fall in love with. On explaining ‘Tanlines’ he says:
“A song crafted from the pent-up frozen soul of a sun beaten, beer drenched, hurricane pounded motel that sits on the barrier sand reef known as Long Beach Island. Summer here is a fast burning flame that young hearts gather around in a manic island-fever lusting for love in every form you can imagine. Yes, including THAT one. Anything goes. No one stays. The island becomes a ghost town, absent of footprints in the sand. The memories we take with us back over the causeway are the best we’ll have. We instinctively head east every summer like migrating birds. Planning our attacks like treasure hunters. This song is the treasure map.”
Hailing from Outerbridge in Sheffield, Frankie Beetlestone is one of the most exciting British discoveries that I have come across so far this week.
An effortlessly cool indie-pop sound with captivating lyrics, this talent is creating some fantastic bops – all of which are self-written and produced from his bedroom.
“This song genuinely just came out of thin air. That’s a proper cliche ‘songwriter’ thing to say but it actually did, so leave me alone. It’s basically just an anxious rant about being 19 and taking too many drugs. The chorus started out as a bit of a joke really. You know when you wake up the next day and you say that you’re ‘never gonna drink that much ever again’, it was kind of meant to be that dramatic statement.”
An almighty epic blend of dark-pop, rock and gospel come together on Viia’s debut single ‘Falling’.
This is one of those tracks that makes an immediate impact and leaves you wanting to hear so much more from the 17-year old Darlington-based starlet.
“‘Falling’ is about a guy who didn’t know what he wanted. He rejected me, but he still wanted me around. We used a text message that he sent me, at the start of the song, and we turned a heartbreaking situation into a dark pop anthem. It was the first song that really gave me my sound.”
Anthemic indie rock from an LA-based outfit who create songs that are bursting with energy, character and charm.
Moon Fever are out here to have fun and take us all along that journey with them. They’re poised to usher in a new era of rock that pulls no punches and leaves no bottle left upright – fully enjoying every second of fast living along the way!
“‘Payphone Blues’ we came up with in Hollywood after listening to a bunch of Oasis and Weezer. I think that sums up the musicality of the song. Heavy guitars broken up with melodic music. We also used a kid toy piano. To me it’s a song about being totally down and out. Where your lost looking for some sanctuary anyway you can.” – Mitch, Moon Fever
Washington D.C. native VICU is not only a performer with a finessed vocal tone, but he’s also a self-taught producer, audio engineer, and songwriter.
And listening to ‘Focused On You’ shows just how talented this up and coming talent is; this is a sleek and stripped-back RnB affair which is so easy on the ears that you’ll be playing it on loop for a good while.
Born and raised just outside of Toronto, Cooper Bloom has been performing since the age of two. Growing up through to his teenage years also saw Bloom take part in the world of competitive dance, so it seems only natural that we now have the formations of a promising new pop star.
‘Drinkin Alone’ is a magnificent electro-pop bop that’s all about being honest with yourself and speaking your truth.
“Ultimately, I want to create music that forms a community. For people to be authentically themselves – free of judgment, and to know they are not alone. I want to encourage people to go after what they want and not let anything get in the way.”
With support from the likes of BBC Radio 1, DUMMY, WONDERLAND, NOTION, and EARMILK (plus flagship Spotify playlists), it’s only a matter of time before fast-rising bedroom pop artist girlhouse (aka Lauren Luiz) takes over the world.
Today she’s one step closer to that happening, with the release of fantastic debut collection ‘the girlhouse ep’ and new single ‘pretty girl in la’. The song pays homage to her time in the infamous city, focusing on the anxiety-inducing aura that it has around it.
“This one is very nostalgic of my West Hollywood days, wanting to be an actress and letting people destroy my confidence daily for the sake of the ‘craft’. I have so many memories of being out at bars/ clubs in LA having a lovely time, when out of the blue some stranger would come up to me and tell me that I’m ‘kind of pretty, but not LA pretty.’ Drilling deeper saying that ‘in my hometown I might be a 7 or 8 but in LA I’m merely a 4.’ This happened so many times that I really started to take it to heart, I was 23 and it kind of destroyed me! I would hold my breath going through tunnels just wishing that I could be an LA 8, thinking that would fix all my problems.”
