Another year, another random selection of records for the Mercury Prize…

Bombay Bicycle Club – So Long, See You Tomorrow
Damon Albarn – Everyday Robots

My personal choice is for Nick Mulvey. Jungle, Kate Tempest also get the seal of approval.
The overall winner of the 2014 Prize will be announced at the Barclaycard Mercury Prize Awards Show at the Roundhouse on Wednesday 29 October 2014.
I caught Nick Mulvey at a packed-out Village Underground in London last night. The record’s great but the songs really come to life live, and it’s well worth seeing.
It was his first London headline show with a full band. Personal highlight was hearing ‘Nitrous’ build up to an amazing end. Tour begins in October.
Nick Mulvey releases a new single ‘Cucurucu’ on the 3rd March 2014 through Fiction Records.
I wait all year to see this list get published. Only because it’s interesting to see how many people have already been featured on here.
The BBC Sound of 2014 is often a predictor of what music acts will launch big in over the next twelve months, and has featured the likes of Adele, Jessie J and 50 cent.
This year’s mix is a lot better than last year’s in my opinion, and is definitely more pop-orientated than previous ‘Sounds of’. Here’s the full list:
The top 5 will be revealed daily starting 6th January 6th 2014, with the winner crowned on the 10th. I’m not putting any guesses on who will win this time round though!
Beautiful song, beautiful video, beautiful man.
And it samples Olive’s ‘You’re Not Alone‘ which is heavenly.
This Autumn, Nick will head out on the road as guest to Laura Marling on her UK tour in October, followed by a headline tour of his own in November.
I’ve been a fan of this guy for a few years now. He’s a former founder of the critically acclaimed Portico Quartet and is now releasing his own debut EP ‘Fever To The Form’, out 17th June. Check out here.
