The Tyne – MOVE 2 LA

One of the most exciting outfits to emerge from the UK of late, North-East based Gen Z trio The Tyne have a sound that is immediately likeable to most.

Now 17, the band formed at 14 over a love of classic pop-punk and indie. Having inadvertently built a following of over 400k followers on Tik Tok via performances in their parent’s back gardens, they will soon unveil their debut EP to the world.

Produced by Gethin Pearson (Kennyhoopla/ Charli XCX), their energising new single ‘MOVE 2 LA’ is an effortless blend of emo escapism and contemporary pop-punk.

“‘MOVE 2 LA’ was the first song we wrote that we felt represented us as a band so it’ll always be a special one to us. We wrote it in October 2020 and had the verse and pre floating about for ages and we didn’t know what to do with it without a chorus. We were at the edge of giving up on the song until we finally came up with the chorus we have now. The song is about escaping your problems by any means necessary, even if that means leaving home and ending up in another country!”

Taken from the upcoming EP ‘Born On The Internet’, released through Slam Dunk Records on 13th July 2022.

DAISY – HUBBA BUBBA

Photo / Seannie Bryan

Acclaimed Los Angeles four-piece DAISY return today with an intriguing blend of pop, jazz, punk and R&B.

New single ‘HUBBA BUBBA’ finds the band raiding the ‘90s for inspiration, from the vibe they achieve to the fact they recorded and produced the track in keys player Roswell’s garage.

“We’ve been really deep in our ‘90s bag lately… all the incredible bands we grew up listening to. We were really indulging in ‘90s music in the van on our last tour. We feel super inspired by No Doubt, Third Eye Blind, Dre etc.”

“’HUBBA BUBBA’ is an ode to the west coast and all the incredible music we grew up on. A song about having a sexy secret little crush and not knowing where it’s going to go. We’re completely and totally obsessed with this song!”

New Music: m4x

While I don’t know much about this emerging UK talent yet, I can tell you that m4x is one of the most exciting finds of the week.

New Music: superflirt

Emerging from San Diego is promising new talent superflirt. Self described as ‘makin’ music for the indie kids stuck in the 80s’, this artist crafts a sound that is instantly relatable and hugely charming.

“‘Sober’ is an anthem for that sober friend at a party. When I wrote this I was so over people acting like I owed them an explanation for why I didn’t want to drink. There was a long time that I felt isolated because of this and I wanted to explore that feeling.”

LØLØ – junkie

Photo / Conner Sorensen

LA-via-Toronto rising star LØLØ has firmly cemented herself as one of the most prominent and exciting Gen Z artists to take on pop-punk’s revival.

Sonically addictive, her new single ‘junkie’ is a throbbing, desperate ode to a toxic love affair.

“Everyone says the first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem. Well – I have a problem. I’m addicted to someone who is awful for me in every way. I tell myself I’m moving on, and that I’ll never go back, but I know deep down that I’m never really done with them. I have no control over it. They have an effect on me that I can’t really put into words. But I wrote ‘junkie’ as an emotional outlet the best I could to try and rid myself of this person once and for all.”

Chlöe – Treat Me

Video Directed by Diana Kunst

Track of the week. After her last massive hit Have Mercy‘, Chlöe returns with a phenomenal follow-up in the form of ‘Treat Me’.

It’s probably too early in the year to say this, but I’ll say it anyway. This is my favourite R&B-pop release so far in 2022, and I think it’ll remain that way for some time. The song perfectly balances late 90’s and early 00’s R&B nostalgia with a modern twist that is not only perfectly constructed, but immensely impactful.

Lemonade Baby – i blocked ur account

One of the catchiest indie-pop bops of the week comes courtesy of Australian artist Lemonade Baby.

As the title suggests, ‘i blocked ur account’ is a fun and playful release that was inspired by our ability to electronically cut ties with the people around us – for the sake of our mental health.

“I overheard a conversation between two girls about how they were cutting a toxic relationship out of their life and how they needed to ‘block’ their social media accounts.

To me it’s such a bizarre thing that we have the power to remove people from our lives via the internet. Obviously the girls had very valid reasons to distance themselves from the person but it’s still pretty wild to overhear a conversation like that irl… so I wrote a song about it, giving a big applause to everyone who’s cutting them toxicsssss out!”

New Music: Mads Koch

Photo / Amalie Holm Pedersen

Mads Koch is already an established artist and songwriter within the Danish music scene, having worked with the likes of Mø, Jada and Goss.

While noted for his collaborations with international pop artists, new single ‘The Lake’ sees Koch in a more intimate, almost ethereal setting. Served in an indie-folk style of sound, the track serves as a thought-provoking observation on life and death.

“I think a lot of us can gain a richer and more beautiful existence by practicing an openhearted approach to the transience of life. Not that we necessarily need to dwell on anxious contemplations about death but in away where we can get through this fear by surrendering to it. This is why ‘The Lake’ is a declaration of love to the little, quiet and seemingly uneventful situations, that our days and lives actually is made of.”

The song is released alongside Koch’s debut album ‘Fingers’, of which he says:

“‘Fingers’ is a declaration of love to the acoustic and clean sounds of instruments in an orchestral setting. The songs find themselves in a field between hope, calm and gloominess, while the lyrics reflects the thoughts that takes up a lot of space inside me.”

New Music: Hanwell

Rising talent Hanwell is a UK-based singer, songwriter and producer who crafts indie sounds directly out of his own bedroom.

“I Won’t Let You Down” is a chaotic and upbeat take on indie rock, infusing crunchy rock with energetic hip hop drum machines. The initial sample sounds like the voices in your head overthinking all your decisions; and this perfectly sets up the chaos that pervades throughout the song:

“Right now loads of my mates are going through it and just sinking under all the pressure in their lives and this song is really just to say to them, and anyone else who hears it, that it’s going to be alright in the end. I think people need to know that there’s someone there who’s like ‘I know how you feel, man.’ But know that it won’t last forever.”
