New Music: Poppy Baskcomb

Just three months ago Poppy Baskcomb was working in retail store JD Sports, and this week her co-write for Joel Corry and Mabel’s new single ‘I Wish’ is #23 in the UK charts.

Now, her debut single (and dance floor anthem) ‘Teardrop’ is released, showcasing this artist is one of pop’s newcomers to watch out for.

“’Teardrop’ came about in a session I did with Paul Harris and James Hurr where we decided we wanted to write a big pop tune. Something that you could hear the likes of Miley Cyrus on with influences from Robyn and Stevie Nicks. When it came to the lyrics we just had fun with them, combining all of our experiences from nights out and club romances. It’s the first song where I really felt like there was a lot of me in it. And that’s why I’m so gassed to have it as my first single and I hope everyone else is too.”

ELIO – SUPERIMPOSE

One of pop’s most exciting new talents, ELIO shares yet another bop in the form of her single ‘SUPERIMPOSE’.

“‘SUPERIMPOSE’ is one of my favourite songs I’ve written. My last EP was generally pretty serious in it’s content so it was so nice to let go and just write a really fun and fluid pop song. I love how the song is about having a crush on someone and wanting to be all over them, but the melodies are somewhat dark and ominous. I’ve been really focusing on vocal production on my new music, and I feel like SUPERIMPOSE is the first little taste of what’s to come, lots and lots of vocal layers!”

At just 23, ELIO has become the epitome of future-facing pop, already releasing two EPs (plus a remix EP) over the past year alone.

New Music: Marianna Winter

American-Faroese emerging starlet Marianna Winter crafts a style of soul pop which is nothing short being completely mesmerising.

Born and partly raised between Tórshavn and California, Winter is one of the few female artists currently pioneering the lo-fi underground scene in the Faroe Islands.

“I tend to spend a lot of time making sure that the people around me are good, but sometimes I just wish I could be someone who doesn’t feel the need to answer every text within 2 seconds or fix every problem, and just say ‘fuck it, I’m busy’. You know? ‘BMM’ (Busy Making Money) is an anthem to anyone who secretly pretends to be a ruthless, champagne-popping, cut-throat, money-making bitch.”

Watch: Deb Never – Funky

Deb Never shares visuals for her single ‘Funky’, which is a track lifted from the new EP ‘Where Have All The Flowers Gone?’

Deb captures the universal urge to make things and feelings last as life passes by. The video shows what it’s like to dream of a world full of what you love, but waking up to a reality barren of any of it.

‘Where Have All The Flowers Gone?’ EP is out now.

New Music: clovo

Emerging from Australia’s Gold Coast comes alt-pop artist clovo. With a polished approach to music-making that feels confident and self-assured, her powerful debut single ‘Girls’ was written as an anthem for all women who stand against sexual assault and discrimination.

“I wrote this song on International Women’s Day and being inspired by that, it outlines issues of women being sexualised and objectified in society and it is an anthem for all women to have a voice against sexual assault and discrimination. I was listening to a lot of Grimes, Mia Rodriguez and Billie Eilish at the time and felt empowered to be part of this revolution of women speaking their mind. I always feel inspired when I hear songs from women taking a stand with their music, and I wanted to do the same and hopefully inspire other women.”

Two Another – You’re Gone

Two Another are back with spellbinding new single ‘You’re Gone’, telling the story of a secret gay high school romance – and one that vocalist Eliot Porter wished he always had.

Confronting the shame he felt throughout his years at an all-boys high school, Porter was unable to express his sexuality, causing him stress and inner turmoil. Looking back into his past experiences allows him to accept who he is today, while finally voicing his inner frustrations:

“We would meet up after school, why’d we have to make it so secret?

Scared of that they might have heard, never thought that we deserved anything”

New Music: TEOSE

Glasgow-based 3 piece TEOSE were self-releasing a series of DIY recordings over lockdown, eventually leading them to signing to Kaleidoscope Records earlier this year.

With a deceptively simple yet distinctive style of indie-rock, their songs feel refreshingly raw and impactful – leading me to feel confident that this alternative outfit will acquire a solid fan base over the coming months.

Part of a double single package which is out now.

Sola – You Don’t Have To Say

Sola returns with another phenomenal release in the form of new single You Don’t Have To Say’. Intriguingly taut yet dreamy, the song tells of the battle between being trapped by your memories whilst simultaneously trying to move on from the past.

“‘You Don’t Have To Say’ explores how to move forward from the past while also reflecting on the bittersweet feelings that memories can often provide. The juxtaposition in the bassline and synths makes you feel a little uncomfortable which is something I love to capture in my music.”

Franki – Keep Dreamin’

Franki continues to prove himself as one of Ireland’s most exciting newcomers thanks to the release of new single ‘Keep Dreamin‘.

This is the kind of song that makes an immediate impact, with distorted and layered vocals contrasting against a production that blends electronica with pop seamlessly.

“‘Keep Dreamin’ is about expressing the vast array of emotions you deal with after you separate from someone you love. You feel desperately lost and confused and have all these questions you want answered and sometimes it can be easier to create a false reality instead of having those questions answered.”

New Music: Alysdare

As a fantastically exciting new talent emerging from LA, Alysdare brings a refreshingly original approach to alternative R&B.

The Ohio born and raised songwriter, producer, and multi instrumentalist releases his new single ‘STUPID JAZ BUBBLE GUM POP’ today, and it’s just about the most unique track that I have come across all day.

“The song spilled out in an hour the day after I broke up with a girl named Jaz… My favourite person to this day but the timing was all wrong. I was in the studio with my engineer when he played this drum beat and i started immediately laying these pretty jazz chords but in a very pop sense of voice hence the title and little double entendre ‘stupid jazz bubblegum pop’. The lyrics literally happened almost entirely freestyle and I think it’s still one of the most honest pieces I’ve wrote to date.”

DYLYN – Hurt

DYLYN consistently surprises and impresses with each release, and ‘Hurt’ is no exception. This is a track that fuses raw rock n’ roll with infectious pop hooks perfectly.

“It touches on subjects that people are a little uncomfortable with like social anxiety, sexual anxiety, and depression. We translate rougher experiences into who we are. The lyrics ask, ‘Who hurt you, babe?’ It exposes the darker parts of ourselves. In the darkest times of my life, I’ve learned the most.”

RIVER – Brother

Johan Lenox + Ant Clemons – You Up?

Grammy Award-nominated composer Johan Lenox collaborates with Grammy Award winning artist Ant Clemons on a deliciously dark release today.

As one could expect from these two powerhouses, ‘You Up?’ is a perfectly constructed sound that seamlessly fuses genres together into an intricate sound that you are sure to fall in love with.

A strongly relatable song to most, the track’s theme touches on childhood nostalgia, millennial life, and love life burnout and is taken from Johan’s forthcoming album ‘What Do You Want to Be When You Grow Up?

New Music: Finches

UK-based newcomer Finches crafts a new kind of pop that is not only expressive and vulnerable, but also fresh and engaging at the same time.

With it’s lo-fi production and acoustic essence, ‘Simp Song’ provides a dreamy and lucid listening experience.

“Over the last year with the in the lockdown, the way I approach expression and my own sense of masculinity changed, I learnt to look into my expression of vulnerability as authentic, genuine and more in touch with my fragile side.”

Ben Provencial – Man I Used To Be

Singer songwriter Ben Provencial returns today with another slice of emotive indie-pop in the form of new single Man I Used To Be’.

With his catalogue of releases now accumulating over two million collective streams across all platforms, it’s safe to say that this Atlanta-based artist is one to watch.

“‘Man I Used To Be’ was written about losing someone important in a romantic relationship. It’s also about realising your mistakes after it’s too late and wishing you could go back.”
