Track of the week. A massively exciting talent hailing from LA, Finn Harry has that unique ability to craft a style of alt-rock that feels understated and controlled, yet packed with a raw essence of confidence that feels refreshingly rebellious.
Not only is twenty-year old talent Kay Seeyen shaping up to become part of the UK’s next wave of exciting musical talent, but he’s also studying neuroscience at university.
His release of ‘Pillow Talk’ showcases a lo-fi pop approach to music making and is matched with vivid lyricism that keeps you hooked from the start. On the track, Seeyen says:
“A song I wrote imagining the first night out clubbing after lockdown ends in the UK, and the things that come with a night out – getting into a confrontation with some guy that’s pushing into you on the dance floor, convincing a girl you’ve been getting with to come home with you, and ultimately waking up next to someone you don’t know with a terrible hangover. Being deprived of my student social life for close to a year makes dreaming of simple nights out a good source of song writing for me, and I hope that my excitement and energy for the return of that social life shines through in this song.“
LA-based producer and multi-instrumentalist andreas owens is not only a talented soloist, but also performs as the lead vocalist of indie pop and RnB group The Millennial Club.
His new release, ‘falling & falling’ actually samples The Millennial Club’s single ‘If You Stay’, creating an exciting yet experimental alt-pop track that looks at society’s addiction to social media and the internet.
“The concept behind ‘falling & falling’ alludes to our collective (and my own) societal addiction to our phones. I remember having a conversation with my friends about how we all kinda want to be on our phones less, but still sadly just find ourselves ‘crawling back’ to them every single day. I think we’ve all had similar thoughts, wondering, ‘omfg how is it possible that I’ve been scrolling through TikTok and Instagram for two hours?’”
Representing a fresh new wave of indie-pop talent from the North West of England, More In Luv are a 4-piece group could potentially be the next big outfit to take the country by storm.
Their new single ‘Someone Else’ was written about seeing someone close to you changing for the worse. It’s an experience all too many of us can relate to, yet this song takes that horrible ordeal and turns it into a glittering indie-pop bop!
A multi-talented creative, Alessia Labate is a 23-year old Milan-based singer, songwriter, vocal producer and pop artist.
While already a prolific performer (having been a contestant on Italian talent shows Io Canto and The Voice of Italy), the release of ‘Conversations With Myself’ is likely to be the first time many of us have heard from this exceptional talent.
And it’s an almighty stomper of a pop track; one that’s full of big beats and relatable lyricism. On the track, Alessia says:
“I was unconsciously starting a spiritual awakening and the day I wrote ‘Conversations with Myself’ I was really immersed in it. I’m concerned about my behaviours and how they can hurt both me and other people, as I’m not really good at choosing the right words when in an argument. That’s the premise of the song… I’m a really straightforward person and I might come across as indelicate and bitchy when I speak my mind, and I used to be like that even more before Covid.”
A gorgeously melodic release from Austrian native artist Marie Lang, who’s beautifully emotive vocal is hard not to fall in love with.
Through some thoughtfully constructed lyricism, we discover that her new single ‘Cut U Off’ is all about the importance of setting up personal boundaries; even if it means ending a meaningful relationship.
“There’s always two sides to a story and you can stay true to yours without discrediting someone else’s. Sometimes it just comes down to ‘speaking a different language’ and having love for each other doesn’t always translate into understanding, even though it’s no one’s at fault.”
Taken from the forthcoming EP ‘HEART GAMES’ which is out soon.
A richly eclectic approach to pop from US talent Danny Bowens. This is a uniquely captivating sound that fuses elements of RnB and hip hop seamlessly, forming a style of music that feels charming and playful, yet deep and emotive.
Outside of music, Danny is a man of many talents; he is a thrill-seeking adrenaline junkie who has travelled the world climbing mountains and surviving in the wild. On the other hand, he’s also a college graduate who has worked in hospitals saving lives and practicing medicine to become a doctor. On the song, Danny says:
“Is it possible to be addicted to another human? To be stuck in their trance, as still as stone. You know they’re bad for you, destructive even, but you can’t help but do anything to keep them close. You’ve tried to stay away, you know what you need to do but your lust for them drives you right back into their clutch. You don’t want them, but you need them. It took me years to recognise how toxic my last relationship was, how it brought me closer to the edge than I’ve ever been, and how much I craved the risk. I was blind to her perniciousness, kept ‘stoned’ by her beauty, her love, her bone-chilling stare. She was my Medusa.”
A beautifully sensual and sleek blend of alt-RnB and pop from American talent jessa. Her approach to music making combines airy and soothing vocals with rich, complex harmonies to form sounds that are nothing short of sublime.
“I started writing this song shortly before NYC went into lockdown last year and finished writing and recording it while quarantining. The song was inspired by a new relationship with a close friend with who I shared close mutual friends. There was this funny, kind of high-school vibe with our friends always asking ‘so what’s going on with that’ and not knowing what to tell them and trying to be low-key but inside just so into it.”
A bold fusion of punk, rock and pop from a hugely exciting British talent who’s aim is to make music for people who feel like like they’ve been dealt a bad hand, underwhelmed and wanting more from life.
“My first song ‘Eye Contact’ is for people who find themselves seeing the same faces, in the same places every night. Numb and f*cked up, dancing to the same song, because it’s better than giving in to a normal life.”
With support already coming from BBC Introducing, Esmae is an aspiring British pop talent who’s style of music blends 90’s RnB with a more modern dance twist. The result is a sound that feels familiar yet refreshingly relatable.
“I really believe that I’m right where I need to be now and I’m excited to see what the future holds.”
Taken the upcoming debut EP ‘Do Better’ which is due to be released later this year.
A tantalisingly fresh blend of pop and funk from up-and-coming British songwriting and production duo LUX.
Upon listening to the infectiously catchy ‘Girlfriend’, you’ll enjoy some sharp vocals laid over a finessed production that blends sleek beats with elements of that classic early 00’s hip hop & RnB sound that we all love.
Hugely promising new Nordic electro-pop artist SIGNE DØ crafts a sound so richly intricate and dark that you are prone to falling for it’s charm within seconds of pressing play.
Her new single ‘Frail’ focuses on the attraction for the unknown, and portrays the frailtyand chaos connected to stepping out of the comfortable and familiar.
“The song was written at a time when I forgot what I had. It does not conclude, but reminds you that when leaving what you love, you also leave a part of yourself behind.”
Taken from the upcoming EP ‘Ways of Escaping’ which is out in May 2021.
Swedish indie-pop duo Vola Tila’s distinctive blend of indie and pop-rock features haunting vocals and hazy atmospherics that culminate in huge swathes of emotion.
New single ‘Not Your Fault’ looks at the their thoughts on the concept of time, and being stuck in a desire for something else.
“We know that the present is the only thing we have. Despite this, the future has had a great impact on us, and we have many times been stuck in a desire for something else, looking for something that does not exist. We processed a lot of this when we wrote the album. But we both realised somewhere along the way that we could not find what we were looking for until we stopped looking.”
Taken from the debut album ‘Soon’ which is out now.
It’s not easy to create a sound so beautifully emotive in such a delicate and subtle way. Yet Kassel-based singer-songwriter Georgi Krastev has done just that with his new single ‘Light Years’.
The song looks into those feelings we all go through when a relationship begins to fall apart; the emptiness, the frustration, the glimmers of hope, the bittersweet end, and the lingering regret.
“I wrote this song after the end of one of my first relationships. I was very immature and inexperienced and, typical of me, instead of accepting reality, I tried forcing things to work the way I wanted them to. Diamonds are made under pressure but, given enough force, anything will break. And so it did.”
Life wouldn’t be normal if we didn’t feature at least one Swedish pop talent every week. So here’s a treat for you!
JAYNIE takes inspiration from the music of the early 2000s and adds a current spin to create something playful and charming; all the while her lyrics carry darker tones as a contrast. On her new single ‘Blame’, JAYNIE explains:
”It’s like playing chess, you have to be smart and know the next move to ruin the other persons plan (aka push the right buttons to get an outcome that’s in your favour). But it’s silly, because in the end it’s JUST a game, but it can get a little too serious and then it’s not fun anymore. It’s knowing when you’ve gone too far that’s the hardest I think.”
