New Music: CalundƩ

Hailing from the Netherlands is promising newcomer Cas Erkeland, who goes by the alias of CalundƩ.

A master of many skills, this talent writes, composes, produces, records and performs his own work, leading to praise from the likes of Indie Shuffle and KCRW.

Today he unveils an uptempo and uplifting pop anthem in the form of new single ‘TALK!’. With its infectiously memorable melody and catchy lyrics, this is one song to add to your playlists for the weekend ahead.

“‘TALK!’ to me is about a kind of nostalgic, hopeful despair. For the first time I spoke to many people physically, including a date that I suddenly bumped into after a long time. Such a spontaneous meeting was uncomfortable, but also a hopeful bright spotĀ to be able to have conversations out of the blue. It’s a new kind of appreciationĀ of an encounterĀ like that, no matter how awkward and clumsy it can feel.”

New Music: C’est Karma

Photo / Shade Cumini

Luxembourg-raised talent and activistĀ C’est Karma is still only 20-years old, yet carries a vocal that immediately grips any listener. With sincere lyricism and beautifully melodic productions, this is one artist to watch.

ā€˜Coffee’ serves as a moving goodbye to the innocence of childhood, and was inspired by the artist’s move away from her home town to Amsterdam.

ā€œCoffee’ is a song about growing up. I moved away from home for the first time this year. It was a strange and at the same time very liberating experience. This process also made me very aware of the fact that I am growing up. I’m leaving my adolescence behind and staring straight into adulthood’s eyes. I wanted to take the simple and subtle changes in my life and turn them into a metaphor for my own adulting. However, all these changes also come with existential fears, and insecurities I never knew I had. The fear of living an adult life, of being caught in an endless circle, the insecurity that the most exciting part of life will soon come to an end. ‘Coffee’ is a very introspective and intimate song, both musically and lyrically.ā€

Taken from the forthcoming EP ā€˜Amuse Bouche’ (out 13th May 2022).

New Music: Hymner

Emerging Stockholm-based producer duoĀ Hymner construct a unique brand of sad dance-pop that is really quite captivating to experience.

New single ‘Rivers’ features the vocals of Persian-German singer SamajAi, and delivers a subtly melancholic sound that feels haunting yet fragile in equal measures.

“We wrote ‘Rivers’ during the pandemic, and it became very symbolic; being so far away from people we loved, yet united in spirit.”

New Music: Juliana Madrid

Photo / Ben Ruttner

Texas-based alternative singer-songwriter Juliana Madrid has released one of the catchiest indie songs of the week with ‘Peppermint’.

Still only 21-years old, this rising artist cites the likes of Fiona Apple, Patsy Cline, Elliot Smith and Brandon Flowers as key influences.

ā€œIn this song I wanted to convey all the feelings you can have from just a single moment. In this case – a brief interaction with an ex lover – how weird it can be to see someone out of the blue that you knew so well, now as a near stranger. You remember the love you shared, the little details about them you almost forgot. You kinda miss them but you don’t forget the chaos, the heartache, and everything else they put you through. With a sigh of relief, you acknowledge that your choice of not being in their life anymore was the best decision you could have made. So this interaction isn’t really a sad one – it’s reassuring.ā€

‘Peppermint’ features a stellar roster of talent – having been written by Madrid, Benjamin Ruttner (The Knocks), Simon Oscroft (Almost Monday, Naked and Famous) and Matthew Koma (Kelly Clarkson, 5SOS, Shania Twain).

The song was produced by Ruttner and Oscroft, and includes Matt Chamberlain (Lorde, Fiona Apple, Tori Amos, Zola Jesus) on drums.

New Music: Thavoron

Photo / Gemma Cross

Emerging from Seattle is 21-year-old first-generation Cambodian American artist Thavoron.

By masterfully fusing elements of dream pop with indie, jazz and rock, this artist creates songs that are conceptually refreshing in tone, yet deeply personal and rich in emotion.

New single ’18’ sees Thavoron deliver lyricism that touches on aspects of queer youth, lust, and the emotional scars of traumatic relationships.

“’18’ is about a situation I went through when I was eighteen, naive, fresh out of high school, and desperate to love. The only thing that my partner at the time would see in me was my physical body. It’s mentally taxing to know that even if you do offer all parts of yourself to someone. No one is obligated to love you the way that you love them. Some people pick and choose which parts of you to fully see, and this song is about the events leading up to that. I wanted to highlight the sadness and beauty of intimacy and movement with this song. There’s something so inspiring about altering your concept of self and reclaiming your power in the same body you once felt so used in.”

New Music: Good Scott

Track of the week. Already a noted artist and producer within the UK music industry, Good Scott is the new moniker for the talent formerly known as Kwassa.

Showcasing some of the most exciting new music to emerge from London in quite some time, Good Scott’s new single ‘Sorry Not Sorry’ features ST LUNA – and could well be your favourite alt-pop bop for the summer.

“‘Sorry Not Sorry’ was the breakthrough from a year or so of writing and nothing clicking – I’d been doing a lot of writing / production on other projects and whilst being able to jump around different genres is my favourite thing ever, it made it pretty hard to settle on what my sound for this project was going to be.

When me and Luke (ST LUNA) started making the track, it fell into place pretty fast – and felt like one of the first songs I’d made recently that I would’ve listened to anyway if I’d stumbled across it. At the time I was just craving a break from sad boy culture and desperate to make something tongue in cheek and a bit silly. Fun lyrics combined with the hints of breakbeat / early 2000’s vibes in the drums is something I wanna keep in the rest of the tracks coming.’’ – Good Scott

New Music: Jack Panther

Photo / Frances Carter

Emerging from Auckland is rising queer artist Jack Panther. After spending much of his youth with his headphones on, listening to Sky Ferreira and writing angsty poetry, Panther now crafts masterful pieces of melancholic pop.

ā€˜SKI LIFT 001’ is a chilling and introspective track about missing someone close to you.

ā€œLast winter I went skiing for the first time since going with my ex-boyfriend and so many bittersweet memories came flooding back to me. I remember having an epiphany while skiing that I took so many moments with him for granted. It’s a feeling that I think resonates with a lot of people – nostalgia can hit you so hard and so quickly. Writing this song was so cathartic to me, I had a lot of feelings towards my ex and I think in a way I wrote it to acknowledge these feelings and try to move on.”

New Music: Bebe Barry

A playful and utterly charming blend of pop, indie and rock from rising London talent Bebe Barry.

After being diagnosed with PTSD and ADHD as an adult, Barry found that she suddenly had a lot to say – and songwriting was her way of saying it.

“I wrote this song about the incredibly chaotic feelings I get from having ADHD, and feeling like I would be able to take on the world if my brain got the dopamine that a neurotypical brain gets. I feel like I fully embraced myself in writing and recording this – all my weird and wonderful sides – and had a whole lot of fun doing it! It’s an anthem for anyone who feels they don’t quite fit in the mainstream. I LOVE performing it live, although I will admit a few times, I got so carried away and excited I forgot the lyrics for a quick second! Because the song is so mad, it didn’t matter at all! It just adds to the chaos.”

New Music: Daisy Grenade

Daisy Grenade are a rising bubblegrunge outfit from Brooklyn, helmed by bandmates (and musical theatre artists) Dani Nigro and Keaton Whittaker.

Through a funny series of paths crossing and a fateful production of American Idiot that was shut down because of Covid, Dani met Keaton and they started writing together because, “wouldn’t it be funny if we just started writing pop-punk music?”

That sound turned out to be pretty spectacular – so much so that the duo can call on Pete Wentz as a mentor.

With a dark and atmospheric take on alternative pop, this talent crafts songs that showcase refreshingly raw lyrics over emotive melodies.

New Music: GENTLE

Hailing from Toronto are emerging outfit GENTLE. New single ‘Softcore’ is a gorgeously atmospheric and arresting release that showcases this band’s perfected blend of dream-pop and shoegaze.

With the opening line “Called you, I had a panic attack”, the song expands into an explosive arrangement of massive drums and effects-laden guitars.

ā€œ’Softcore’ recounts toxic relationships in our lives. The first verse recounts the time I called my girlfriend (at the time) for comfort while having a major panic attack to which her reply was “I’m at a party and need to go”. The song exposes our frustrations with absent partners but when we stay with them and give them more chances, it’s our fault as much as theirs.ā€ – Oliver O’Brien, GENTLE

GENTLE are slated to release a full EP in the coming months, and will go on tour in April and May 2022 – playing shows in Quebec City, Montreal, Guelph, Toronto and Hamilton.

The Tyne – MOVE 2 LA

One of the most exciting outfits to emerge from the UK of late, North-East based Gen Z trio The Tyne have a sound that is immediately likeable to most.

Now 17, the band formed at 14 over a love of classic pop-punk and indie. Having inadvertently built a following of over 400k followers on Tik Tok via performances in their parent’s back gardens, they will soon unveil their debut EP to the world.

Produced by Gethin Pearson (Kennyhoopla/ Charli XCX), their energising new single ‘MOVE 2 LA’ is an effortless blend of emo escapism and contemporary pop-punk.

“‘MOVE 2 LA’ was the first song we wrote that we felt represented us as a band so it’ll always be a special one to us. We wrote it in October 2020 and had the verse and pre floating about for ages and we didn’t know what to do with it without a chorus. We were at the edge of giving up on the song until we finally came up with the chorus we have now. The song is about escaping your problems by any means necessary, even if that means leaving home and ending up in another country!ā€

Taken from the upcoming EP ‘Born On The Internet’, released through Slam Dunk Records on 13th July 2022.
