Rebecca Lappa – Lolita

Award-winning singer and songwriter Rebecca Lappa returns today with a fabulous new single that deserves your attention.

Serving as a taster to the artist’s upcoming ‘Tales of a Taurus’ EP (out 5th May), new single ‘Lolita’ showcases an energising fusion of indie, pop and rock. Detailing the inspiration behind the song, Lappa says:

“The song touches on the two main characters in the book alluding to the forbidden nature of the relationship between an older man and a much younger woman and the frenetic dynamic between the two. The muted guitars fill the track with urgency and the heartbeat of the kick drum lends commentary on the perceived sexuality and innocence of young women as interpreted by male audiences, while the careful layering of synth and harmonies leads to an anthemic chorus.”

Having amassed hundreds of thousands of streams, Lappa is rapidly marking her name as a Canadian talent to watch. Tastemaker praise for Rebecca comes from the likes of Beats Per Minute, Atwood and Lock magazines.

JERUB – Cold

Nottingham musician JERUB delivers one of the most anthemic indie-pop songs of the year yet.

‘Cold’ was inspired by the twists and turns that occur in relationships, and how these changes can have an impact on your heart.

“As I reflect on life as I’ve gotten older, I realise that every relationship goes through seasons. There is summer, where everything is warm and exciting, but winter, where it’s cold and difficult. On ‘Cold’, I wanted to write about the effects of changing friendships and how they can cause me to close up and put up walls even when I know I don’t want to be alone. As I grow, I am learning that no matter how cold our hearts may get, we’re all (myself included) still searching for love.”

Currently commanding more than 60k monthly Spotify listeners, JERUB’s momentum continues to grow with each release.

Tastemaker support for the artist has come from heavyweight outlets like BBC Radio 1, NOTION and Wonderland magazines.

As far as emerging UK-based talent goes, this is most certainly one artist to keep on your radars.

New Music: moreofthem

One of the most interesting newcomers to emerge from London this week has been non-binary talent moreofthem.

New single ‘capture the moment’ is refreshingly vivid at its core, and treats listeners to an upbeat fusion of hyperpop and glitch-pop. Lyrically, the song encourages us to embrace our true selves, regardless of what might be deemed as the norm on social media.

“‘capture the moment’ touches on the concept of social media consumption and the pressures we face when living up to societal norms. The key point was to be honest and direct with how even though we have our digital distractions that can cause us loads of anxiety and uneasiness with our identity, it’s completely okay to be different than everybody else and know your self worth.”

moreofthem aims to release more new music that centres around themes as important as empowerment, inclusivity and acceptance.

You can catch the artist performing at the Fiddler’s Elbow in London as part Camden Rocks on the 6th May – details can be found here.

Dempsey Bolton – With My Thoughts

Canadian indie talent Dempsey Bolton is no stranger to the Alfitude pages, and today’s release of ‘With My Thoughts’ will give you an idea as to why we love this artist so much.

While the production for the song feels lively and fun, the lyrics look at the inner demons that can sometimes hinder us from enjoying life. Dempsey elaborates further on how the song was created:

“The production was a labour of love for me; 1 wrote the song on acoustic guitar and recorded the demo the next day, tracking the live bass, electric guitar and putting together the drum loop in a couple hours. After that, I had what ended up being a hundred or so synth and vocal parts that I eventually whittled down into the 2 choruses and 2 verses. 1 knew I wanted a B section but 1 wasn’t sure where to go. Then I stumbled onto an organ and recorded my voice in a key that was 3 steps lower, thinking I could pitch it up and have it be a fun effect I ended up keeping my scratch “doo doos” and sampling them into the tremolo’d vocal you hear in the back half of the song. The section felt so dark and vibey by then and I knew I wanted to bring the chorus back again but also have it reflect the mood so I pitched down the vocals and had 3 different textures to fatten it up. The result is probably my favourite song to date.”

And we’d have to agree with Dempsey – this is also our favourite release from the artist yet. Listeners who want to experience more of Bolton’s work can check out his brilliant debut album ‘Monochrome’ here.

New Music: Dorio

If you happen to be looking for some retro-futurist indie-pop then today’s your lucky day.

Austin-based musical project Dorio create songs that are inspired, in part, by the Japanese Shibuya-Kei pop movement that was prominent in the 90s.

This style of sound fuses orchestral pop with other genres like lounge, house and funk, to create pieces of music that are both current and nostalgic in equal measures.

New single ‘Lost These Days’ features vocals from Rachel Rascoe, and treats listeners to a charming sound that is almost impossible not to fall in love with.

“It’s a song about finding your way outside your living room stage.” – Dorio

The song is taken from the Dorio’s forthcoming ‘Strawberry Dream’ album, which is out later this month.

The Thing With Feathers – Can You See Me

Rising Nashville rockers The Thing With Feathers have just released their highly anticipated new EP, entitled ‘Waste My Revenge’ (available here).

One of the stand-out songs from the record is ‘Can You See Me’, which is an unapologetically bold and rousing piece of music that effortlessly blends rock with elements of indie and pop. Elaborating on the EP, vocalist David Welcsh explains:

“I think our other bodies of work are difficult to compare because I love our first record. I think that the difference is we really started to learn who we are and who we can be while we were making this EP. It was invigorating. I mean after we recorded we really haven’t been able to stop writing. It’s almost as if something just clicked during that process and now we just sort of know when something sounds like us. We’re definitely an ambitious band and we are never going to stop searching for a greater understanding of what it means to sound like us and how our sound will develop. We’re always going to be chasing the next song. This record felt like we found a cornerstone.”

The Thing With Feathers currently command more than 48k monthly Spotify listeners, and have picked up praise from outlets as noted as The Independent, Live Nation and MTVs Spankin’ New.

LUCA – Wrong

Everything that Harlem-based artist LUCA seems to touch these days is turning to musical gold.

Hazy new single ‘Wrong’ is one of the most sublime tracks we have come across so far this month, and presents listeners with a mesmerising blend of lo-fi pop, soul and R&B.

“The song represents the inevitable feeling of emptiness when a relationship ends and the desperate need to return to the spectre of that lost love, even when you both know that time is past. There is an ever-present hole that is left behind after someone who was an integral piece to your life is no longer a part of it; the space it occupies – mentally, physically, and emotionally. What goes up must come down in a relationship and ‘Wrong’ represents that come down to earth moment – the catharsis of that emotional freefall.”

With only a handful of singles released to date, LUCA has already exceeded over a million streams on Spotify. Fans can look forward to a debut EP, which will be out soon.

New Music: Kahone Concept

This week’s award for most relatable song title goes to ‘I Like You but Don’t Talk’ from Pittsburgh-based singer and producer Kahone Concept.

Melodically memorable and lyrically playful, the song treats listeners to an infectiously feel-good fusion of pop and rock. Explaining the meaning behind the song, Kahone says:

“Sometimes you want to be left alone without any hard feelings towards those around you, No grandma it’s not personal, I just really don’t feel like explaining why I am not married yet. No mom I’m not upset with you, I just don’t really feel like talking about if I’m eating healthy lately. No boss, it’s not personal, wait actually never mind you can’t really talk to your boss like that.”

While Kahone Concept might be a name new to you, this talent is already picking up significant momentum, and has garnered more than a million cumulative streams to date.

Cub Sport – Hold

Photo / Mia Rankin

It’s a big day for acclaimed Australian pop outfit Cub Sport, who have not only released a new single but also unveiled their fifth studio album.

‘Hold’ is a stunningly constructed piece of dance-pop that perfectly balances emotions of melancholy with euphoria.

Sonically inspired by nightclub sounds from the millennium era, the song feels nostalgic and familiar, but still retains a sense of uniqueness. Elaborating further on their new album, Cub Sport’s Tim Nelson explains:

“I think that’s the beauty of writing honestly about my own life – it all fits together and reveals a little bit more of this greater story that’s still playing out, from an ever-evolving perspective but with the same heart. We have the self-appointed freedom to evolve and change and I think that’s why, five albums in, it still feels exciting.”

UK-based fans can catch the band on tour later this month. Dates and tickets can be found here.

Binoy – Boyhood

Fans of Robyn’s ‘Body Talk’ era will absolutely fall in love with Binoy’s anthemic new single, ‘Boyhood’.

The track’s pulsating electro-pop production is juxtaposed with brutally honest lyricism that is inspired by the artist’s struggles with being gay from a young age.

Bloody clothes

Nobody knows I’ve been at war

Stomping up my driveway to the house

And if my mother always knew

That didn’t stop her being cruel

To date, this rising LA-based talent has amassed more than 650k streams on Spotify alone. Fans can look forward to an upcoming EP, also entitled ‘Boyhood’, which is scheduled for release soon.
